Chapter 21 - The New Table

Benton Strategy’s first investor dinner was deliberately small.

Twelve people.

No private ballroom.

No politicians.

No spouses placed for optics.

Noel built seating chart herself.

Then gave it to her COO, Jasmine Reed, and said:

“Change anything you want.”

Jasmine did.

Noel survived.

At dinner, Grant toasted.

“Noel, champagne?”

“Water.”

He poured water.

No joke.

No pressure.

That tiny moment nearly made her cry.

She didn’t.

Afterward, a junior analyst named Ben spilled red wine across Grant’s cuff.

Ben froze.

Grant looked.

“Great. Now I own a tie-dye shirt.”

Everyone laughed.

Noel laughed too.

The room kept moving.

That was what normal looked like.

Not perfection.

Accidents without punishment.

Dignity surviving a spill.

Noel went home and thought about Darius less than she had all month.

The federal restitution judgment was satisfied later that year after asset sales and payment plan completion.

Holt Table confirmed recovery.

Case closed financially.

Darius completed supervised release without violating no contact.

Domestic battery probation long finished.

No further charges.

No hidden second scheme.

No secret offshore money.

No revenge lawsuit.

Noel’s divorce equalization payment completed.

The last automatic transfer from Darius’s settlement account arrived.

She stared at notification.

Then deleted reminder.

No more financial ties.

Maya sent one email:

Congratulations. Every scheduled marital settlement obligation is complete.

Noel replied:

Please never congratulate me in legal billing language again.

Maya:

$450/hr to discuss tone.

Noel laughed.

May you like

Closure had become administrative.

That was better than fireworks.
