Chapter 9 - The Voice Memo

Serena made a voice memo at the lodge.

Not for police.

For herself.

She said she thought Victor might kill her too.

At 10:42 p.m., she locked herself in a bathroom and recorded:

“If something happens to me, Victor pushed Elena.”

Then:

“She was alive when she landed. I heard her.”

My heart stopped.

I had not remembered making sound after impact.

Serena heard.

“What did I say?”

Ross looked at transcript.

“You screamed Victor’s name.”

He left anyway.

Then Serena:

“I wanted to call. He took my phone. He said it would be too late by the time anyone came.”

She cried in recording.

“He keeps saying a hundred million solves everything.”

A hundred.

Both policies.

Then:

“He says Martin can make the child paperwork work.”

There.

Martin’s denial of murder knowledge came under new pressure.

Did Martin know Victor intended fake live birth?

Maybe after.

The message logs showed Martin replied to Victor:

I WILL NOT PROCESS CHILD WITHOUT MEDICAL PROOF.

Victor:

YOU ALREADY VERIFIED IT.

Martin:

THAT WAS FOR BINDING.

Victor:

THEN FINISH WHAT I PAID FOR.

Martin stopped responding.

At 6:31, Martin placed anonymous fraud call.

So perhaps he did not agree to murder fraud.

He was still criminally corrupt.

But he drew a line late.

Then Serena’s memo continued.

“Victor wants a memorial fast because he says grief makes people stop asking questions.”

That was why funeral happened without body.

He wanted narrative.

Then:

“He said if Adrian Cross finds out Elena is his daughter, we lose everything.”

Serena knew.

Then:

“I asked why Adrian would know.”

Victor answered:

“Because the policy will hit his desk.”

He expected Cross Atlantic to pay, not investigate.

Arrogance.

Then the final line:

“He says once the money comes, we leave.”

Where?

Monaco.

Victor had opened an account in Luxembourg? Could be too cliché. Investigators found travel plan:

Private jet reservation to Geneva.

Then yacht charter in Monaco.

No need secret offshore evasion? But he intended flee after payout perhaps.

He had also paid deposit on villa lease under Serena’s name.

She knew.

So she had motive to cooperate with murder.

Then investigators found a postnuptial draft.

Victor planned to divorce me after? If dead no need.

Instead an unsigned estate document claimed:

Elena leaves all personal property to Victor.

Forged signature.

Prepared three weeks earlier.

Why?

My own assets.

I had about $1.8 million inherited from Lydia and savings.

Small relative to insurance.

Still.

Victor wanted everything.

Then my mother’s house.

A cottage outside Boulder.

Victor had already contacted a realtor.

The morning after the fall.

Asked potential sale price.

He believed my death immediate.

Then my hospital stay remained secret through funeral.

After Victor saw me alive, his carefully built grief collapsed publicly.

Reporters learned arrest.

Memorial became evidence.

The hot microphone clip leaked through court filings months later.

I hated hearing people replay:

“That worthless woman got what she deserved.”

But it destroyed sympathy.

Then I made a choice.

I released one statement through attorney.

I am alive. My son is alive. I will not discuss an active criminal case.

That was all.

No photo.

No hospital bed.

No bruises.

May you like

Victor had used my image at a memorial.

I would not turn survival into spectacle.
