Chapter 12 - Victor’s Parents

Victor’s family entered the story late.
His father Thomas Hale was sixty five.
His mother Evelyn Hale sixty two.
They lived in Connecticut.
I had seen them twice a year.
Polite.
Distant.
They had always described Victor as “ambitious.”
When he was arrested, Thomas called me.
I did not answer.
He sent a letter through Rachel.
We had no idea about the policies.
Likely true.
Then:
We knew Victor was in financial trouble.
That mattered.
How much?
Thomas had lent him $8 million two years earlier.
Victor never repaid.
Thomas refused more.
Victor stopped speaking to him.
Then Thomas wrote:
I told him bankruptcy was better than fraud.
Victor replied:
You’d rather watch your son fail.
Same wound.
Then Evelyn.
She knew about Serena.
My stomach turned.
“When?”
Six months.
Victor told her marriage was ending.
She believed.
Did she tell me?
No.
Why?
“He said you knew.”
Again.
Adults choosing easier story.
Then Victor’s parents cooperated with prosecutors.
No financial crime.
Thomas had records of Victor requesting money.
One email:
I need 20M bridge or Cross policy becomes necessary.
Thomas:
What Cross policy?
Victor never answered.
That showed scheme already in his thinking.
Then Thomas gave investigators something else.
A voicemail.
Victor after I refused to sign documents on mountain? No, before trip:
“Dad, when this is done, I won’t need your money again.”
Thomas called back.
No answer.
He thought Victor had investor.
Now understood.
Then Victor’s mother asked to meet Noah someday.
I said:
“Not now.”
She accepted.
Unlike Adrian, they had known Victor his whole life.
I needed time.
Then Thomas did something that surprised me.
He filed civil claim against Victor for the $8 million loan.
Not to punish.
To prevent Victor from transferring remaining assets away from restitution victims.
He told his lawyer:
“If there is money left after Elena, insurers, lenders and government claims, then I stand in line like everyone else.”
That was reasonable.
Then Serena’s parents.
No significance.
She was adult.
No need make every family relevant.
Then my own mother’s estate.
Lydia left me a small house near Boulder and $430,000.
Victor had tried to sell house after my “death.”
He had no authority until probate and death certificate.
Still called realtor.
The house became evidence of intent to immediately liquidate.
I decided later to keep it.
Not because sentimental only.
It was the only place my mother had fully owned.
No Cross.
No Hale.
Then I changed Noah’s surname legally after divorce?
Not yet.
Court allowed me to restore my maiden name:
Elena Marlowe.
For Noah, Victor’s paternity remained.
His surname:
Hale.
I did not force symbolic change while baby.
Later he could choose.
Then the first custody report.
Victor requested photographs from jail.
I allowed none.
Rachel asked:
“Why?”
“Because he tried to kill him.”
That was enough.
Court agreed no contact pending criminal disposition.
Then Serena formally entered plea negotiations.
Before signing, she asked to send me one message.
I said no.
May you like
I did not need her apology to understand she called rescue.
That fact could coexist with refusal.
