Chapter 8 - The Claim Before the Search

Victor filed the claim at 6:14 p.m.
The shove occurred around 5:27.
Search and rescue was not called until 6:39.
By Serena.
Not Victor.
That surprised me.
She used a hotel bathroom phone.
Anonymous.
“I think a pregnant woman fell near Independence Pass.”
Then hung up.
That call probably saved me.
She had done one thing right after doing many wrong things.
It mattered.
Did not erase.
Then Victor noticed search vehicles.
He demanded to know if she called.
She lied.
“No.”
He believed.
Meanwhile he had already called Cross Atlantic.
The claim recording became one of the strongest pieces.
CLAIMS SPECIALIST:
Mr. Hale, has death been officially confirmed?
VICTOR:
She went over a ravine in a whiteout. There’s no way she survived.
SPECIALIST:
Were you present?
VICTOR:
No. She went walking alone after an argument.
Lie.
SPECIALIST:
How do you know the location?
Pause.
VICTOR:
She texted me.
No text existed.
Then:
SPECIALIST:
You are also reporting the unborn child deceased?
VICTOR:
Yes.
SPECIALIST:
Was there a live birth?
VICTOR:
Yes.
My stomach turned every time I heard.
The specialist asked:
Where?
Victor said:
“On the mountain. A witness saw.”
Who?
He gave Serena’s name.
Serena never witnessed birth.
My baby remained inside me.
Then Victor asked:
“Can both benefits be handled together?”
The specialist flagged.
Then Martin’s anonymous call.
Then Adrian.
Why was Adrian in Aspen?
Cross Atlantic held an annual executive risk retreat at a resort thirty miles away.
He was there.
Claims fraud director called him because:
$50 million death claim.
Second $50 million juvenile binder.
Same incident.
No confirmed bodies.
Internal override by Martin Vale.
Enough to escalate.
Then Adrian saw my name.
Elena Lydia Hale.
Mother:
Lydia Marlowe.
He asked:
“Where is she?”
No body found.
He contacted county authorities.
Cross Atlantic had a contracted mountain rescue aviation provider for insured travel incidents? A bit unusual but possible as corporate assistance service. They offered helicopter capacity.
Adrian went.
Against his security team’s advice.
Was that why he ended up on the cliff?
Yes.
Not because billionaires routinely rescue people.
Because he believed I might be Lydia’s daughter.
And because a hundred million dollar claim had been filed before anyone proved I was dead.
Then my smart watch.
Recovered from my wrist.
It contained fall detection.
Timestamp:
5:27:18.
Altitude change.
Impact.
Heart rate.
Then continued pulse for nearly two hours.
Proof I was alive after Victor reported death.
Victor’s phone location showed he left the cliff at 5:31.
No attempt to descend.
No emergency call.
Then his vehicle.
Telematics showed doors opened at overlook.
Car remained nineteen minutes.
Then left.
Serena’s phone connected to hotel Wi-Fi at 5:58.
At 6:14:
Victor called insurer.
At 6:39:
anonymous rescue call.
At 7:24:
he sent his first message to my sister? I have no sibling. Maybe friend Natalie.
To my friend Rachel? Let's introduce best friend Sophie Grant maybe.
VICTOR TO ELENA’S FRIEND NATALIE:
Elena walked off during storm. We can’t find her.
He staged concern after claim.
Then:
Please pray.
I stared.
A man can use prayer as evidence too.
Then Ross said:
“We found the message he sent Serena at 6:16.”
Two minutes after claim.
VICTOR:
DONE. FIFTY FIRST. BABY AFTER.
Serena:
I feel sick.
May you like
Victor:
Think about Monaco.
