Chapter 23 - Adrian’s Will

Adrian rewrote his will at seventy.

He showed me only the parts involving me because transparency mattered.

No surprise inheritance.

I received:

A diversified trust interest.

A portion of personal property.

No controlling Cross Atlantic stake.

No automatic board role.

No requirement to use Cross name.

No condition about Noah.

No dynasty.

I signed acknowledgment that I knew structure.

Not consent needed for his will.

Just clarity.

Then Noah received separate education and support trust managed professionally.

Adrian told him:

“You can refuse any distribution.”

Noah said:

“Why would I?”

We laughed.

Children eventually become practical.

Then Adrian developed heart disease in his seventies.

Managed.

No immediate death.

He stepped fully away from business.

Spent more time in Colorado.

Annoyed me.

Loved Noah.

Then Victor.

Still imprisoned.

Noah exchanged occasional letters.

Not regular.

At nineteen, he requested one supervised prison visit.

I did not go inside.

He went with therapist and Victor’s parents’ family representative? Evelyn was elderly. Perhaps professional.

Afterward I waited in car.

Noah got in.

Quiet.

“How was it?”

“He looks old.”

Victor was in his fifties by then.

Prison ages people.

“What did you talk about?”

“My engineering classes.”

Noah studied mechanical engineering.

Then:

“He asked if I use Hale.”

“What did you say?”

“That my name is Noah Marlowe Hale.”

Good.

Then:

“He cried.”

I waited.

Noah looked out window.

“I don’t forgive him.”

“Okay.”

“But I don’t hate him anymore.”

“Okay.”

Then:

“I don’t want another visit soon.”

“Okay.”

His relationship.

His pace.

Then Victor wrote me one letter after that visit.

First in nearly twenty years.

Elena,

Thank you for allowing Noah to decide.

I stared.

Then:

I understand now that I spent most of my life treating other people’s choices as obstacles.

True.

Then:

I am sorry.

Again.

No request.

I did not respond.

That was fine.

Then Serena.

No contact.

Martin.

No contact.

Ross.

Christmas card.

Megan the nurse?

She had become nursing supervisor.

We stayed loosely connected.

On Noah’s twenty first birthday, I sent her a photo.

She replied:

HEARTBEAT STRONG.

I cried.

She remembered the first monitor.

Weak.

Fragile.

Alive.

Now six foot one and complaining about graduate applications.

Life.
