Chapter 7 - Martin Vale
Martin Vale came to investigators with two attorneys.
No bravado.
He knew.
He admitted:
Policy override.
Copied signatures.
False financial justification.
Improper beneficiary change.
The baby binder.
The $750,000.
He denied knowing Victor intended murder.
Ross asked:
“Why create a policy on an unborn child?”
Martin answered:
“Victor said the family wanted immediate coverage at birth.”
“Fifty million?”
“He represented the child as probable future Cross heir.”
“Was Adrian Cross aware?”
“No.”
“Was Elena?”
“No.”
“So who had insurable interest?”
Martin looked down.
“Victor claimed Hale Legacy Capital would manage family assets.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“No.”
Then the live birth verification.
Martin admitted he changed system status.
Why?
To allow the binder number to generate before delivery.
He planned to correct it after birth.
That alone could have destroyed his career.
Then the prefilled death documentation.
Did Martin create?
“No.”
Who?
Victor.
Martin received copies after mountain incident.
When?
Thirty minutes before Victor filed claim.
Victor texted:
WE NEED BOTH CLAIMS READY.
Martin replied:
CHILD CONTRACT IS NOT PAYABLE WITHOUT LIVE BIRTH.
Victor:
IT WAS LIVE.
Martin:
WHAT?
Victor then sent the fake birth declaration.
Martin said he panicked.
Did not submit it.
Instead he called a claims supervisor anonymously and told them to flag both policies.
That anonymous warning helped Adrian see the claim.
Interesting.
Martin was corrupt.
Then frightened by where corruption led.
He had built the door.
Victor walked through with murder.
Martin asked for cooperation consideration.
He would still face charges.
Then Serena.
She had been lying since arrest.
At first:
“I thought Elena slipped.”
Hospital:
Victor said:
“You were supposed to freeze.”
Serena:
“You said she wouldn’t survive.”
Her own words damaged that.
Then her attorney requested formal proffer.
She began talking.
The affair started eighteen months earlier.
Victor told her Elena was cold.
Controlling.
Refused divorce.
Standard.
Serena believed.
Then Victor said divorce would cost him “Cross money.”
“What Cross money?”
He explained Elena’s father.
Serena told Martin.
That started insurance conversation.
Did Serena know about bribe?
Yes.
Did she receive money?
$90,000 in gifts.
Not direct bribe.
Then mountain.
Victor told Serena:
“We’re going to Aspen. I need a witness.”
“To what?”
“He said Elena had become suicidal.”
My stomach twisted.
He planned a mental health narrative.
Serena knew that was false.
Why go?
Because Victor promised after “everything was resolved” they would be together.
What did she think would happen?
At first she said:
“I thought he would scare Elena into signing divorce papers.”
Ross waited.
Then:
“Ms. Quinn.”
She cried.
“Fine.”
She knew there was an accident plan.
Victor said he would take Elena near a ravine, create a confrontation and make it look like she wandered off during storm.
“Did you know he would push?”
“He said he might have to help her over.”
There.
She knew.
Not exact timing.
Not method.
But enough.
Then why stand there?
“Because I was terrified.”
Why leave?
“Because Victor said if I called anyone, I’d go down too.”
Fear.
Complicity.
Then she described after the fall.
She begged Victor to check ledge.
He refused.
She wanted to call rescue.
He took her phone.
Drove them back to lodge.
Then gave it back after deleting recent call history.
He said:
“Two hours in this weather and there’s nothing left to save.”
Serena did not call.
That choice would cost her.
Then she said:
“At the lodge he opened champagne.”
I closed my eyes.

Victor toasted:
“To freedom.”
