Chapter 7 - Why Monday Mattered

Asteron postponed my formal signing authority for one week.

Not the promotion.

The authority.

While compliance reviewed conflict.

I understood.

Still, it felt like Daniel had reached into my career from miles away.

Rachel called.

“You are still Regional Sales Director.”

“For now.”

“Claire.”

“For now is accurate.”

“You disclosed immediately.”

“After four years.”

“You didn’t know.”

“That’s what they’re verifying.”

Silence.

Then:

“Do you want me to tell the team anything?”

“No personal details.”

“Hair?”

“They can see it.”

“You don’t owe anyone an explanation.”

Good.

On Monday morning, I joined the regional leadership call bald.

Nobody laughed.

Nobody asked.

My vice president simply said:

“Congratulations again, Claire. We’re glad you’re here.”

I almost cried.

Daniel had shouted that no boss wanted a bald wife.

My boss wanted the employee he promoted.

Simple.

Then compliance requested an interview.

Melissa.

Internal counsel.

External auditor.

They walked through the fake email.

Signature.

Vendor history.

My relationship with Daniel.

When I learned of his investment.

I answered everything.

Then they showed me something I had never seen.

MSH invoices.

Asteron paid for client events.

Most normal.

Some not.

Luxury hotel charges above contracted rate.

Transportation fees duplicated.

Consulting surcharges.

Small enough individually.

Large over time.

Potential overbilling under review:

Approximately $620,000.

My stomach turned.

Daniel indirectly profited from the vendor.

Did he create inflated invoices?

Unknown.

Then one vendor expense bothered me.

Executive retreat.

Date:

Last year.

Asteron did not hold an executive retreat that week.

Melissa agreed.

Invoice:

$18,400.

Location:

Naples, Florida.

Hotel.

Catering.

Private transportation.

Who attended?

Vendor described:

Regional leadership hospitality.

No attendee list.

Payment approved through a manager who had since retired.

The hotel address was three miles from Eleanor’s condo.

Coincidence?

Maybe.

Then Arthur found travel photographs from Eleanor’s public social media archive before she locked the account.

Same week.

Naples.

Pool.

Caption:

A little rest after taking care of everyone else.

She had been staying at her own condo while Asteron was billed for a supposed leadership event nearby.

Did that mean company funds paid her vacation?

Not yet proven.

Then one more invoice.

Monthly:

Administrative coordination.

Vendor subcontractor:

EMW Services.

Asteron paid MSH.

MSH paid Eleanor.

So my employer had indirectly paid my mother in law for years.

While I personally paid her prescriptions.

I sat still.

Melissa said:

“Claire, this is now a significant investigation.”

“I understand.”

“We need you completely separated from decisions involving MSH.”

“Yes.”

“Your role otherwise continues.”

I exhaled.

Then she asked:

“Why did your husband insist you resign before Monday?”

“I don’t know.”

Maybe we did now.

The vendor audit was scheduled Monday.

My new role would receive results.

Daniel knew the promotion date.

Maybe not exact audit date.

Did Eleanor?

Asteron’s audit schedule was confidential.

Then Melissa showed me an email.

Three weeks earlier, MSH received notice that its enhanced vendor audit would begin Monday.

Vendor contacts knew.

Daniel was an indirect owner.

Eleanor was a subcontractor.

They knew exactly.

My promotion and the audit started the same day.

If I resigned, I would not receive the audit file and might never connect household transfers to MSH before Daniel could restructure ownership.

The timing was no coincidence.

Then a text from Eleanor to Daniel, two days before the shaving:

May you like

IF SHE STARTS MONDAY, SHE’LL SEE EVERYTHING.

Continue to the next part: Eleanor’s message proves they knew Claire’s promotion would place the hidden vendor relationship directly in front of her.
