Chapter 6 - The Fake Claire
The Gmail account still existed.
Asteron’s legal team handled preservation requests.
I did not attempt access.
Daniel knew enough about my work to imitate me.
Eleanor knew enough about my schedule to know when I traveled.
But neither possibility was proof.
Then the signature.
Asteron compared it with old expense forms.
It matched a scanned signature block from one of my 2019 travel documents almost exactly.
Same tiny broken curve in the C.
Likely copied.
That helped.
But compliance still needed to understand why my name had been used.
The vendor onboarding file included an introductory email.
FROM: Claire Hart
I’ve worked with Midwest Strategic Hospitality through personal contacts and believe they would be a strong fit for regional programs.
I never wrote it.
Then:
Their principals are independent of my household and family.
False.
Whoever wrote it knew conflict rules.
That mattered.
This was not random identity theft.
Someone wanted Asteron to believe no family connection existed.
Then I remembered a night four years earlier.
Daniel sat at the dining table using my old personal laptop.
His had crashed.
He asked:
“What does your company require for event vendors?”
I thought he was curious about winning corporate clients.
I explained:
Insurance.
References.
Conflict disclosure.
Competitive pricing.
Maybe security review.
He laughed.
“You make everything complicated.”
I never connected it again.
Until now.
Then Eleanor.
She used to work in hotel catering before retirement.
She knew venues.
Event managers.
Hospitality companies.
She may have introduced Daniel to the industry.
Nothing illegal in that.
But why hide?
Arthur found another public filing.
Harbor Ridge Management had three original members.
Paul Benton.
Lakeview Capital Partners.
And:
DWC Ventures.
DWC.
Daniel Whitmore Consulting?
Public documents showed DWC Ventures formed by an attorney as nominee.
Beneficial owner not public.
Arthur could not declare.
Then divorce discovery began producing internal records.
Daniel’s attorney objected to broad business requests.
Susan argued marital income and hidden assets made them relevant.
Court ordered limited production.
Two days later, Daniel’s business statements arrived.
D Whitmore Consulting owned:
Thirty percent of DWC Ventures.
DWC Ventures owned:
Twenty percent of Harbor Ridge Management.
The math.
Daniel indirectly owned six percent of Harbor Ridge.
The parent of MSH.
My husband had an ownership interest in a vendor my employer paid millions.
I had never known.
How much had he earned?
Profit distributions:
Approximately $184,000 over four years.
Separate from consulting fees.
Then Eleanor.
EMW Services owned another interest through Lakeview Capital?
Not yet confirmed.
Arthur said:
“Don’t jump.”
I didn’t.
Then Daniel called through attorneys asking to speak about “marital repair.”
I declined.
He sent a letter.
Claire,
I never wanted your promotion to become this.
Interesting wording.
He wrote that he invested in Harbor Ridge because it was a good opportunity.
He kept it private because he knew Asteron conflict rules were strict.
There.
Admission.
He said he never influenced vendor selection.
He believed MSH would have been selected anyway.
Maybe.
Then:
You did not know because I was protecting your career.
I laughed aloud.
Protecting.
By using a fake email in my name?
He denied creating it.
Claimed Paul Benton handled onboarding.
Did Benton know Claire was Daniel’s wife?
Daniel said no.
Then why use my name?
He claimed:
“I told Paul my wife worked at Asteron, and he must have assumed you were referring us.”
That did not explain the forged no conflict certification.
Then a text from four years earlier surfaced in Daniel’s records.
PAUL:
Need referral email from your wife or another internal sponsor.
DANIEL:
I’ll handle Claire.
My chest tightened.
Next:
PAUL:
She knows you have equity?
DANIEL:
No.
PAUL:
Then don’t use her.
DANIEL:
Too late. She’s already told me vendor requirements.
That was as far as the production went.
