Chapter 2 - Account 7719

Daniel reached across the desk.

“Turn the transfer back on.”

I closed the laptop.

“No.”

“You don’t understand what that account is.”

“Then explain it.”

“It’s household reserves.”

“Great. Show me the statements.”

He stopped.

Eleanor looked between us.

“Daniel?”

He ignored her.

“Claire, you’re emotional.”

I touched my bare scalp.

“Yes. I wonder why.”

“Don’t make financial decisions while you’re angry.”

“You just held me against a mattress and shaved my head.”

“That has nothing to do with money.”

“It has everything to do with money.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You always do this.”

“Do what?”

“Act like paying bills makes you the only adult in this house.”

I stood.

“Then prove me wrong.”

“How?”

“Tomorrow you pay them.”

He laughed.

“You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

“The mortgage is in both our names.”

“And I’m not destroying my credit to prove a point. I’ll arrange my share through counsel.”

The word counsel landed.

Daniel went still.

“Counsel?”

“Yes.”

Eleanor stepped forward.

“You’re going to threaten your husband with lawyers because of hair?”

I looked at her.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Because your son thinks my body is his disciplinary tool.”

Nobody answered.

I took my laptop.

Phone.

Work bag.

Then walked toward the guest room at the opposite end of the house.

Daniel followed.

“Where are you going?”

“To sleep somewhere with a lock.”

“Claire.”

I turned.

“Come near that door tonight and I call the police.”

He stared.

I had never said that to him before.

Maybe I should have.

I locked myself inside.

Then sat on the edge of the guest bed.

My hands began shaking so badly I almost dropped my phone.

I photographed my scalp.

My wrists.

The hair still clinging to the shoulders of my silk sleep top.

Then I opened my messages.

My assistant, Rachel Moore, had sent congratulations after the promotion dinner.

YOU EARNED THIS. GET SOME SLEEP. MONDAY WILL BE INSANE.

Monday.

Three days away.

My new role officially began Monday.

I typed:

WORKING REMOTELY TOMORROW. FAMILY EMERGENCY.

Then I called one person.

Arthur Klein.

He had handled my father’s estate and helped me buy this house before I married Daniel.

He answered after four rings.

“Claire?”

“Arthur.”

The word broke.

He immediately became alert.

“What happened?”

“My husband shaved my head while I was asleep.”

Silence.

Then:

“Are you safe right now?”

“Locked room.”

“Any weapons?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you want police?”

I looked at the door.

Not yet.

That answer would change later.

“I want to leave in the morning.”

“Good. Do not confront him about finances tonight.”

“I already canceled payments.”

Arthur exhaled.

“Which payments?”

“Anything coming from my personal account that covered Daniel or Eleanor.”

“Mortgage?”

“I stopped the automatic draft but I’ll pay directly once you tell me how.”

“Fine.”

Then I mentioned account 7719.

“Monthly transfer. Forty eight hundred.”

“How long?”

“Maybe three years.”

“What is it for?”

“Daniel says household reserves.”

“Do you have access?”

“I don’t think so.”

Arthur paused.

“Send me screenshots. Don’t try to guess tonight.”

I did.

Then I opened our joint account.

Balance:

$12,480.

That seemed low.

My salary deposit alone was more than that each month.

I started scrolling.

Normal transactions.

Groceries.

Utilities.

Restaurants.

Then transfers.

Every month.

Sometimes twice.

$4,800.

$3,200.

$6,000.

I counted twelve months.

$71,600.

My pulse increased.

Then another recipient.

EMW SERVICES.

$2,100.

$2,100.

$2,100.

Every month.

Eleanor’s initials?

Maybe.

I searched.

No description.

Another:

NORTHSHORE CLIENT SOLUTIONS.

Amounts irregular.

$1,400.

$3,800.

$900.

Daniel had told me those were business reimbursements.

I had never checked.

At 3:07 a.m., an email arrived from my bank.

PASSWORD RESET REQUEST.

Not mine.

Daniel.

I changed my password immediately.

Then enabled new multifactor authentication.

Thirty seconds later, he knocked.

“Claire.”

I said nothing.

“Open the door.”

“No.”

“I need to talk to you.”

“Tomorrow.”

“Turn the transfer back on.”

“No.”

His voice became softer.

“Please.”

That scared me more than shouting.

“Why?”

Silence.

Then:

“Because something important gets paid from there Friday.”

“What?”

He did not answer.

I heard Eleanor whisper behind him.

“What did she cancel?”

Daniel hissed:

“Go back to bed.”

I stared at the banking screen.

Friday.

Two days away.

Something important.

I opened transaction history further.

Every Friday after my monthly $4,800 transfer, account 7719 sent money somewhere else.

Same recipient.

MIDWEST STRATEGIC HOSPITALITY.

The name meant nothing to me.

Yet when I saw it, something tugged at my memory.

I had seen it recently.

Not at home.

May you like

At work.

Continue to the next part: A company name hidden inside Daniel’s “household reserve” appears in the paperwork for Claire’s new executive role.
