Daniel’s plea in the assault case came later.
Before that, his attorney fought the interpretation.

The afternoon before my promotion dinner, Daniel and Eleanor spoke for forty seven minutes.

Again.
I did not destroy it.

Harbor Ridge offered to repurchase Daniel’s interest at a deeply discounted value due disputes.
Daniel refused.
The private lender holding his investment loan threatened foreclosure.
He needed cash.
He listed Milwaukee townhouse for sale.
Then Scottsdale condo.
Assets I never knew existed became the things saving him from debt I never knew existed.
Symmetry.
Then divorce mediation.
Daniel offered me half of his hidden properties if I dropped claim that Harbor Ridge interest was marital.
Susan said classification required analysis.
I said no rushed deals.
We would trace.
He hated that.

Claire,
I never wanted Daniel to hurt you.
I believed humiliation would wake you up before the company destroyed him.
The company.
Not marriage.
Not family.
The vendor scheme.
Then:
You were about to expose everything without understanding how many people depended on that money.
I read it twice.
That was her defense.
Dependency.
Employees.
Investments.
Family.
What about my career?
My body?
My right to know?
Not included.
Then final paragraph:
If you had simply resigned, none of this would have happened.
