Chapter 12 - Eleanor’s House Rules

Eleanor finally moved out of my house.
Not because I asked her directly.
Temporary court orders allowed me exclusive use after the assault hearing.
Daniel moved into a furnished apartment.
Eleanor moved where she said she could never afford to live.
Naples.
Her condo.
I returned home with Susan and a locksmith.
The bedroom smelled like Daniel’s cologne.
My hair still remained in the vacuum canister housekeeping had not emptied.
I threw it away.
Not ceremonial.
Just trash.
Then I opened Eleanor’s room.
Almost empty.
One drawer contained a notebook.
Susan said:
“Don’t take anything until we know whether it’s yours to access.”
The notebook sat in my house in an abandoned drawer.
We photographed location, then counsel handled.
It was Eleanor’s handwritten budget.
Not illegal secrets.
Just numbers.
Monthly income:
Social Security.
Pension.
EMW consulting.
Rental income from Naples when not using condo.
Daniel support.
Then:
Claire household contribution.
$1,200.
She had categorized my allowance as income.
Another page:
DANIEL BUSINESS GOAL.
Need Claire to reduce work travel.
Need Claire off Asteron conflict.
Need family stable before audit.
Date:
Six months earlier.
The audit?
Asteron audit had not been scheduled six months earlier.
Maybe vendor contract renewal audit.
We checked.
MSH’s Asteron contract renewed annually each fall.
Enhanced ownership disclosure would be required this year because spending crossed $2 million.
Even without my promotion, MSH faced deeper scrutiny.
Daniel and Eleanor knew.
Then:
Options:
Daniel buys out DWC interest before disclosure.
Move DWC interest to Eleanor.
Claire leaves Asteron.
My stomach tightened.
They had considered my resignation months before the promotion.
Why?
If I left Asteron, family conflict rules might become irrelevant after a certain period.
Not enough to erase past nondisclosure.
But it would reduce risk.
Then another line:
Promotion would make impossible.
There.
Eleanor knew about my possible promotion before I did?
I had been shortlisted confidentially.
Only my VP, HR, and perhaps one recruiter knew.
How did Eleanor know?
Daniel.
He saw an email?
I checked home printer history.
Three months earlier, I printed a draft compensation comparison.
Maybe he saw it.
Then the notebook:
If promotion confirmed, Daniel must act before Monday.
Act.
What did that mean?
Conversation?
Ultimatum?
Hair?
No direct mention.
Then a page dated the day before assault:
He won’t do it unless pushed.
I stared.
Eleanor had pushed him.
Did she tell him to shave me?
Police interview transcripts later answered partly.
Daniel said Eleanor told him:
“Do something she cannot hide at work.”
He claimed she meant create a domestic crisis.
Eleanor denied.
Then Daniel said:
“She joked maybe shave her head so she has to call in sick.”
My chest went cold.
Joke.
Maybe.
Then text from Eleanor:
BET SHE WON’T SHOW HER FACE ON MONDAY IF YOU RUIN THAT HAIR SHE LOVES SO MUCH.
Timestamp:
9:41 p.m.
Two hours before he attacked me.
That was not a vague joke anymore.
Did she tell him to restrain me?
No evidence.
Did she encourage humiliation designed to keep me away from work?
Yes.
Then after:
ELEANOR:
DID SHE AGREE TO QUIT?
DANIEL:
SHE SAYS YES.
ELEANOR:
GOOD.
They believed it worked.
My lie about resigning had bought me time.
Then the next message:
DANIEL:
SHE’S CANCELING PAYMENTS.
ELEANOR:
WHAT PAYMENTS?
DANIEL:
ELEANOR:
STOP HER.
May you like
The finances and abuse collided in one thread.
Continue to the next part: Eleanor’s own notes and messages show the humiliation was intended to keep Claire away from work long enough to protect their hidden vendor interests.
