Chapter 5 - Patricia Had Her Own Five Hundred Thousand Reasons

The first financial tie to Patricia appeared two days later.

Meridian’s $1.2 million advance had gone into CrossWave.

Most went to payroll and overdue operating bills.

But $150,000 moved the same afternoon to Cross Strategic Advisors LLC.

Owner:

Patricia Cross.

Description:

Executive retention and fundraising advisory.

CrossWave had paid Patricia’s company for years.

Some services were real.

She organized investor dinners.

Handled certain founder communications.

Managed Daniel’s schedule during early years.

But the newest payment was unusual.

The board had not approved it.

Megan Ellis said:

“I didn’t authorize.”

Victor Shaw:

“I didn’t know.”

Daniel initiated it using CEO authority.

Why $150,000?

Rachel obtained an internal side letter during CrossWave document preservation.

If Hawthorne $5 million funded:

Cross Strategic Advisors would receive an additional $600,000 “capital-raising success fee.”

Total potential Patricia compensation tied to my investment:

$750,000.

I stared.

“She gets three quarters of a million if I sign?”

Rachel nodded.

“Not disclosed in your investment package.”

That violated draft representations regarding related-party payments.

Meaning even if Daniel had never threatened me, the investment likely could not have closed once discovered.

“Does Patricia know?”

“She signed side letter.”

Of course.

I thought about dining room.

Apologize, you useless little wife. My son pays for your life.

No.

Her son had been planning to pay her with the investment I had not yet made.

The cruelty was personal.

The money gave it structure.

Texts recovered later from Daniel’s phone made it worse.

PATRICIA:

Make sure she signs immediately after honeymoon.

DANIEL:

She will.

PATRICIA:

Don’t let Rachel reopen diligence.

DANIEL:

Wedding locks it.

PATRICIA:

Marriage doesn’t lock trust.

DANIEL:

Claire won’t embarrass me after ceremony.

That line stayed with me.

He did not believe marriage gave him legal control.

He believed marriage gave him emotional leverage.

Different.

Worse.

Another:

PATRICIA:

If she hesitates remind her CrossWave is your future together.

DANIEL:

She likes being needed.

There.

He understood me.

I did like being needed.

Not weakly.

Professionally.

Personally.

May you like

I built a career out of solving problems.

Daniel had converted that quality into financing strategy.
