Chapter 10 - Patricia Came to My Office
Patricia violated the protective order indirectly? It only covered Daniel. She came to my office before separate no-contact order. Let's do.
She entered Hawthorne Risk Advisory lobby seven weeks after wedding.
No appointment.
My receptionist called security.
I agreed to see her only with Rachel and building security present.
Why?
Partly curiosity.
Patricia entered conference room wearing navy coat.
No makeup.
She looked older.
“Claire.”
“Patricia.”
“You ruined him.”
“Daniel forged my signature.”
“You stopped five million over a temper tantrum.”
“He pledged a house he does not own.”
“He was going to repay.”
“Before or after I noticed?”
She clenched jaw.
“You don’t understand what founders have to do.”
“I understand fraud investigations professionally.”
There.
She hated that.
“Don’t talk down to me.”
“I’m not.”
“You have always thought you were smarter.”
“I have always known what my job is.”
Patricia leaned forward.
“My son loves you.”
“No.”
Her face changed.
“He married you.”
“That is not proof.”
“He was under impossible pressure.”
“He threatened to hit me.”
“He didn’t.”
“He swung.”
“You blocked.”
I stared.
That sentence told me she had watched recording or Daniel described.
“You’re excusing because he missed?”
“I’m saying nobody got hurt.”
“You impersonated me before a notary.”
Silence.
Rachel watched.
Patricia stood.
“I did nothing you wouldn’t have eventually signed.”
I felt cold.
“Say that again.”
She realized.
Rachel said:
“Patricia, this conversation is over.”
Patricia looked at me.
“The only reason you are angry is because we stopped asking permission.”
There.
No confession of every element.
But worldview.
I stood.
“Security will walk you out.”
She laughed.
“You’re choosing a company over marriage.”
“No.”
I looked directly at her.
“I’m choosing consent over people who think marriage cancels it.”
After she left, Rachel said:
“Why did you let her in?”
“I needed to hear whether she thought this was a mistake.”
“And?”
“She thinks the mistake was getting caught.”
That afternoon Rachel obtained a civil no-contact order against Patricia after additional harassing messages.
