Chapter 9 - The Baby Who Did Not Exist
The false birth record entered the state system through Judge Voss’s emergency family authority.
It included a hospital verification number from Kane Memorial and a genetic compatibility certificate using the real fetal data taken from me.
On paper, our daughter had already been born beneath the mansion.
If the record remained active, any later birth could appear secondary, disputed, or fraudulent.
The maternal trust recognized the first verified Kane daughter entered into the family registry.
Adrian had created a legal child before my body delivered one.
Martin obtained an emergency order freezing the record, but the trust’s internal clock had already started.
A provisional guardian had been named.
Vanessa Kane.
The false infant could give Vanessa temporary trust control even without a living baby.
“Where is Vanessa?” I asked.
She had remained under state supervision after cooperating.
During the hospital alarm, an officer moved her to a secure room.
The room camera showed her asleep.
A woman wearing a nurse uniform entered, adjusted the IV line, and left.
Vanessa could not be awakened.

The mother, Julia Reyes, was told the infant needed respiratory support.
The baby disappeared from the neonatal unit for thirty seven minutes.
When returned, her bracelet had been replaced.
Julia never consented to Kane family testing.
Adrian used another woman’s newborn body to create our false daughter.
The child remained alive and safe after independent identification, but her medical records had been violated.
Roman listened to Julia’s statement in silence.
Then he authorized the Kane Foundation to surrender its entire maternity program to independent public administration.
No private Kane system would control another birth.
Several board members objected because the hospital represented family legacy.
Roman answered.
“Legacy is the word families use when they want violence to sound historical.”
The transfer required regulatory review, but the first emergency authority moved immediately.
Eleanor watched the announcement from police custody.
She requested to speak with me.
I refused at first.
Then Dr. Brooks said the contractions had stabilized enough for a brief video call.
Eleanor appeared on the screen without makeup or jewelry.
The underground room had changed something in her posture.

Recognition.
“Adrian lied about the father,” she said.
“Yes.”
“I believed him.”
“You wanted to believe him.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“You think motherhood makes you strong.”
“No. Protecting a child requires choices. You made yours.”
“My daughter died because I trusted a man who told me the family knew best.”
“So you repeated it.”
“I tried to prevent you from controlling Roman.”
“I never needed to control him.”
“Every woman says that before she understands what power does.”
“You cut my hair while I was restrained.”
Eleanor looked toward the side.
For one second, shame appeared.
Then it hardened.
“I could not let an outsider take the trust.”
“The trust exists because women like you were imprisoned.”
“It exists because Alexander blamed me for Helena.”
“Did he?”
“He wrote that I failed her.”
Martin found the letter in the maternal shelter archive.
Alexander had not blamed Eleanor alone.
He wrote:
We allowed a family system to overrule a mother’s fear. I was her husband and did not enter the room when she asked. Eleanor obeyed my father because I had trained her to believe Kane authority was protection. Helena died inside all of our choices.
Eleanor had remembered only the line about obeying.
She built her identity around being the woman who would never again lose authority.
Adrian promised she could reclaim it through my daughter.
“Where is he?” I asked.
“I do not know.”
“Who is helping him?”
Eleanor looked toward the camera.
“Samuel Voss created the false birth.”
“We know.”
“He did not create the trust condition.”
“Who did?”
“Alexander.”
“Roman’s father is dead.”
“Yes.”
“Then what are you saying?”
Eleanor lowered her voice.
“Alexander created a second instruction before he died. If the first daughter’s birth is disputed, control passes to the person who proves the family medical records were corrupted.”
Adrian had corrupted them deliberately.
Then he could expose the corruption and claim to be the person who saved the trust.
The false birth was not only a takeover.
It was bait for a second succession path.
Adrian intended to present himself as whistleblower after creating the crime.
He could remove Eleanor, Vanessa, me, and Roman while appearing to protect the child.
“Who holds the original second instruction?” Martin asked.
Eleanor answered.
“Samuel Voss.”
The retired judge had the only authenticated copy.
Police traced his train ticket to an abandoned Kane research property near the coast.
Tactical officers entered.
They found Voss dead inside a study.
No visible injury.
The second instruction was gone.
A camera recorded Adrian leaving twenty minutes earlier.
He carried a leather document case and Nolan’s damaged security card.
Nolan woke from surgery soon after.
He asked to speak with me, not Roman.
I accepted the call.
His voice was weak.
“Bianca, Adrian knew you contacted Martin.”
“How?”
“Someone inside Martin’s office sent him the email.”
Martin froze beside the bed.
Only three employees could access my private request.
One was his executive assistant, Grace Hale.
Grace had arrived at the hospital earlier carrying the emergency evidence folder.
She was no longer in the conference room.
