Chapter 8 - The Room Built for Mothers

Police returned to the mansion with new warrants.
The phrase Rourke remembered referred to an old section beneath the east wing known as the maternal shelter.
Roman had never entered it.
Eleanor told him the area had been sealed after his sister’s death.
Architectural plans showed a private recovery suite built for Kane wives during difficult pregnancies.
Alexander Kane closed it after learning that family physicians used isolation and sedation to control women who challenged the estate.
He created the Maternal Protection Trust in response.
The trust was not only financial.
It was an apology written into law.
Eleanor had managed the trust while hiding the place that caused it.
Investigators opened the sealed stairway.
The underground suite contained four bedrooms, a medical room, and a locked observation chamber.
Old restraints remained attached to one bed.
Cabinets held decades of files involving Kane women.
Roman’s grandmother.
Two aunts.
His older sister, Helena.
And Eleanor.
She had been placed inside the suite during both of her pregnancies.
Alexander’s father controlled her medical care.
Eleanor had once suffered the same system she later used against me.
The discovery did not make her innocent.
It explained how cruelty had become family tradition.
The files showed she lost a daughter after an unapproved procedure intended to determine inheritance compatibility.
Helena died during birth years later after Eleanor ignored signs of distress because the family physician told her the trust verification mattered first.
Alexander blamed the system.
Eleanor blamed the women who entered it without understanding the cost.
She decided no outsider would ever control a Kane child again.
Then I arrived.
A woman from Queens.
No family name.
No inherited wealth.
No fear of restaurant owners, bankers, or Eleanor’s dinner table.
She interpreted my independence as theft.
Adrian used her grief.
The maternal shelter had been reopened recently.
Fresh medical supplies lined the shelves.
A camera system connected directly to Kane Memorial.
The same hospital bracelet prepared for Vanessa rested beside an older set of infant records.
Police found Eleanor in the observation chamber.
She was alive, locked inside, and furious.
Adrian had placed her there after removing her from the interview room.
He left one message on the wall.
YOU TAUGHT ME THE FAMILY SURVIVES THROUGH CONTROL.
Eleanor demanded immediate release and refused medical examination.
Detective Quinn asked where Adrian went.
“He will not hurt the child.”
“You helped him drug the mother.”
“Bianca was never supposed to become injured.”
“You cut off her hair.”
“She needed to be removed from the trust.”
“Why?”
“Because Adrian showed me proof.”
“What proof?”
Eleanor looked toward the camera.
“He said the baby is not Roman’s.”
The allegation reached the hospital within minutes.
Roman heard it beside my bed.
He did not ask me whether it was true.
He asked Martin what evidence Adrian showed.
A prenatal genetic report identified another man as the likely father.
The report came from the hidden procedure.
The laboratory belonged to a company Adrian controlled.
The sample chain had no independent witness.
It could have been fabricated.
It could also have used real material collected while I was unconscious.
Roman looked at me.
“Did anyone else have access to your pregnancy records?”
“Only our doctor and Kane Memorial.”
“Did you undergo genetic testing?”
“No.”
Dr. Brooks ordered independent testing only after I gave informed consent.
I agreed.
Not because Roman demanded proof.
Because Adrian had introduced a claim capable of poisoning every legal process around our daughter.
The preliminary result would take hours.
Eleanor used the false paternity claim to justify removing me.
If Roman were not the father, the maternal trust would not activate.
Why create Vanessa’s substitute record?
Because Adrian’s plan needed multiple outcomes.
If our daughter was Roman’s, remove me and control the trust.
If she was not, destroy Roman publicly and take Kane Capital through family disgrace.
Either result benefited him.
He had prepared evidence for both.
Police searched the maternal suite.
A locked cabinet contained blood samples labeled with Roman’s name.
Some were years old.
Adrian had access to his DNA.
He could manufacture compatible reports.
The hidden procedure may have collected fetal material to compare with those samples.
The independent test became essential.
Rourke identified another room beneath the marina where Melissa might be held.
Police found her alive.
She had been restrained but not injured.
Adrian used her to control Rourke.
Melissa gave investigators a detail.
She heard Adrian arguing with another man through the wall.
The second man said:
Roman must believe the child is his until the birth certificate clears.
Adrian answered:
The trust needs his belief, not his blood.
The conspiracy included another person who understood the trust more deeply than Eleanor.
Martin reviewed every legal adviser connected to Alexander Kane.
One remained alive.
Judge Samuel Voss, the retired family court judge who handled emergency Kane petitions.
He was the same private judge who received my false incapacity filing.
Voss claimed his clerk rejected it.
The electronic audit showed the filing had been opened from his personal account before rejection.
He had reviewed my biometric signature.
He knew the maternal plan was active.
His home stood empty when police arrived.
A private train ticket showed travel toward Long Island.
The route ended near the hospital.
The independent paternity result arrived.
Roman was the biological father with overwhelming certainty.
He exhaled only once.
Then Martin read the rest.
The fetal sample used in Adrian’s report also belonged to Roman’s child.
Adrian had not substituted another fetus.
He had changed the alleged father field after obtaining real data.
The procedure had been performed to create evidence in both directions.
Before we could discuss the implications, the hospital newborn system issued an alert.
A child had just been registered under the name Baby Kane.
Mother: Bianca Kane.
Father: Roman Kane.
Delivery location: Kane Maternal Shelter.
Time of birth: eleven minutes earlier.

I was still pregnant.
Continue to the next part: A false birth certificate appears while Bianca is still carrying the baby, suggesting another infant has been placed inside the Kane identity.
