Chapter 5 - The Procedure Behind the Nursery Wall

A portable ultrasound machine was found inside the nursery.
It did not belong to our obstetrician.
The serial number traced to Kane Memorial Women’s Center.
Hospital records showed the device had been removed for maintenance two days earlier.
Vanessa signed the release under a false technician name.
The nursery floor contained medical gel, a used imaging probe cover, and a sealed container for blood samples.
My blood.
Our daughter’s medical data may have been collected while I was sedated.
The hidden procedure did not appear invasive, but Dr. Brooks could not determine whether anyone had attempted amniotic testing without examining the saved images.
The machine’s memory had been erased.
Its wireless backup remained connected to a private cloud account.
Roman’s investigators obtained an emergency preservation order.
The account belonged to Adrian Kane.
His plane had not crashed.
The mechanical alert was false.
Air traffic cameras showed a different aircraft leaving the airfield while Adrian’s registered plane remained inside a locked hangar.
Someone had created a diversion.
Adrian could still be in New York.
Roman’s anger became focused.
He formed a crisis team inside the hospital conference room.
Martin handled legal preservation.
State detectives handled the assault and medical tampering.
Federal financial investigators were contacted because the trust shares affected public investments and interstate records.
Hospital regulators entered Kane Memorial.
Roman temporarily surrendered his voting authority over any medical foundation decisions involving Bianca or the baby.
He did it before anyone asked.
“I will not let my control become another conflict,” he said.
The independent trustees accepted the transfer.
I watched from the doorway in a hospital robe.
Roman looked toward me.
“You should be in bed.”
“I have been in a chair, on the driveway, and in bed all day. I want to hear what happened to my body.”
No one told me to leave again.
The cloud backup from the ultrasound machine contained thirty seven images.
The first showed our daughter’s face.
The second measured her heart.
The later images focused on the placenta, umbilical cord, and blood flow.
A physician’s voice note accompanied the final image.
“Maternal condition can be accelerated. Fetal profile remains compatible.”
Compatible with what?
Dr. Brooks listened twice.
“That is not ordinary obstetric language.”
Martin searched the Maternal Trust requirements.
At birth, the child’s identity had to be verified through blood type, maternal lineage, and a genetic marker established by Alexander Kane.
A hospital controlled by Eleanor could process the verification.
The portable machine had been used to collect enough information to prepare a birth file in advance.
The rare contrast agent made certain blood flow measurements clearer.
It was not approved for casual use in late pregnancy.
“They were creating the medical record before she was born,” I said.
Martin nodded.
“If the birth happened tonight, they could present their own verification immediately.”
Roman looked at the trust pages.
“What if the baby was born somewhere else?”
“Independent testing would occur.”
“What if Bianca and the child were transferred to Kane Memorial after emergency delivery?”
“Eleanor could attempt to challenge the first results and claim the child required family protection.”
The plan depended on chaos.
An early birth.
A sedated mother.
A frightened husband returning to a mansion full of relatives.
Edited footage portraying me as unstable.
Medical records prepared in advance.
A trust council ready to remove me.
Adrian may have intended to control Roman through the board while Eleanor controlled the child.
Vanessa would become the substitute maternal guardian.
“What did Vanessa receive?” I asked.
Martin searched the draft documents.
She would control trust distributions worth millions each year.
She would also live inside the estate as the child’s court approved guardian if Roman’s work was declared dangerous.
Vanessa had spent years calling me a waitress even after I became operations director at Bellafonte.
She believed wealth was proof of value.
The trust offered her the family status she felt Roman denied her.
Eleanor supplied resentment.
Adrian supplied structure.
Dr. Reed supplied medication.
Security access supplied opportunity.
One participant remained unclear.
The person who opened the gates and placed me outside.
The guard logs showed two men near the service entrance.
Nolan Price.
And Thomas Rourke, head of Kane Estate Security.
Rourke had worked for Roman for eleven years.
He disappeared after the attack.
His family home stood empty.
His bank account received two million dollars from a consulting company controlled by Adrian.
Roman sent investigators to every property Rourke used.
They found his vehicle abandoned near the coast.
Blood covered the driver’s seat.
The amount suggested serious injury.
No body.
One message remained inside the navigation system.
Deliver the woman outside. Preserve the child. Remove Nolan.
Rourke may have participated.
He may also have been silenced afterward.
The message sender used Roman’s internal command signature.
Someone could issue orders as him.
That explained why guards obeyed without questioning the violence.
The estate staff believed Roman had authorized a private family intervention.
Eleanor repeatedly told them he knew.
A command file appeared on the security system at noon.
It stated that Bianca Kane had become unstable and must not leave the estate until Dr. Reed completed evaluation.
Roman’s digital signature authenticated it.
He had been inside a board meeting in Manhattan at noon.
His identity had been copied.
“What system created the signature?” he asked.
The security technician answered.
“Kane Capital executive access.”
Adrian controlled the executive authentication program.
He could issue a command using Roman’s stored voice and biometric records.
The family had not only acted while Roman was away.
They had made the house believe he ordered it.
One of the federal investigators entered with a recovered audio file from Vanessa’s broken phone.
She had been live streaming the humiliation to a private encrypted channel.
Three viewers joined.
Eleanor.
Adrian.
And a user named RK.
Roman Kane’s initials.
The third viewer had watched the entire assault under Roman’s identity.
Then the user sent one message.

Make sure she believes her husband approved.
Continue to the next part: Someone used Roman’s identity to watch Bianca’s humiliation and convince the household that he ordered it.
