Chapter 6 - The Husband They Manufactured

Vanessa’s encrypted stream preserved twenty six minutes.
The camera angle began near the dressing room floor and showed only parts of the attack, but the message log recorded every participant.
Vanessa wrote:
She still thinks Roman is coming home.
Eleanor answered:
He will arrive after the board signs.
Adrian wrote:
Do not discuss the trust on camera.
The user identified as RK sent:
Proceed with medical containment.
Vanessa asked:
Are you sure he agreed?
RK answered:
I am Roman.
The household staff who saw the message believed my husband authorized the restraint.
Vanessa may have believed it too.
Eleanor knew better.
Adrian almost certainly created the false identity.
Yet the login came through Roman’s private device certificate, not only copied credentials.
His actual executive tablet had authenticated the session.
The tablet was supposed to be inside his Manhattan office.
Security footage showed Roman carrying it into the board meeting.
He placed it on the conference table.
At 12:58, the meeting entered recess.
Roman left the tablet beside his assistant.
His assistant, Lucas Ward, took a call and stepped into the hall.
For six minutes, the room remained empty.
The stream login occurred during those six minutes.
Someone physically accessed Roman’s device.
The board building cameras lost power on that floor for seven minutes.
Adrian had attended the meeting remotely.
He needed an accomplice in Manhattan.
Lucas denied touching the tablet.
His phone showed a message asking him to meet a courier outside the conference room.
The sender used my number.
I had been locked inside the dressing room.
The network copied my identity to move Lucas.
It copied Roman’s identity to control the estate.
The attack relied on everyone trusting a familiar name more than the person directly in front of them.
Roman dismissed none of this as sophisticated technology beyond responsibility.
He asked which human being made each choice.
Eleanor ordered the haircut.
Vanessa held me and filmed.
Dr. Reed administered the medication.
Rourke or another guard dragged me outside.
Adrian designed the trust attack.
Someone in Manhattan accessed Roman’s device.
Every participant would answer separately.
That was the first time I understood why Roman frightened powerful people.
He did not need to shout.
He removed the excuses that allowed systems to hide individuals.
The detectives brought Eleanor and Vanessa to the hospital for identification and formal interviews.
They were not allowed near my room.
I watched Eleanor through a secure camera.
She sat upright in a gray interview room, still wearing the ivory gown beneath her coat.
She did not appear ashamed.
“I prevented a dangerous woman from stealing the Kane bloodline,” she said.
The detective placed photographs of my injuries before her.
“She is carrying your granddaughter.”
“She is carrying an heir whose identity has not been independently proven.”
“Do you believe Roman is not the father?”
“I believe Bianca understood the value of pregnancy.”
The detective asked whether she ordered the altered medication.
Eleanor denied it.
Whether she authorized Dr. Reed to treat me.
She called it emergency care.
Whether she cut my hair.
She admitted that.
“Why?”
“She needed to stop using beauty to manipulate my son.”
The answer contained no regret.
Vanessa’s interview was different.
She began confident.
Then detectives showed her the trust payment drafts and Adrian’s private messages.
One message said:
Vanessa remains useful until birth. Remove her after guardianship appointment.
Vanessa read it twice.
“Remove me from what?”
The investigator did not answer.
Another document prepared a criminal complaint accusing Vanessa of assaulting me without Eleanor’s knowledge.
Adrian planned to sacrifice her.
The footage would support it.
Eleanor would describe herself as shocked.
The masked man would remain unidentified.
Vanessa would become the cruel jealous relative acting alone.
In exchange, Eleanor kept trust influence and Adrian gained board control.
Vanessa’s confidence broke.
“He told me Roman wanted proof.”
“Proof of what?”
“That Bianca was unstable.”
“Did you believe Roman ordered his pregnant wife restrained?”
“He hates weakness.”
The answer revealed how little she understood him.
Or how much she needed to believe.
Vanessa began cooperating.
She said Adrian arrived through the hidden passage wearing the raincoat and mask.
Dr. Reed used a voice distortion device to protect him on camera.
Eleanor knew who he was.
Rourke helped move me.
Nolan tried to stop them.
After stabbing Nolan, Adrian ordered Rourke to drive him away from the estate.
Rourke refused.
They fought near the coastal road.
Vanessa did not know what happened after.
“Where is Adrian now?” the investigator asked.
“He has a safe residence beneath the Kane Marina office.”
Police searched it.
The room was empty.
They found blood matching Rourke and a medical cabinet containing the altered prenatal tablets.
They also found a second hospital identification band prepared for our daughter.
The mother’s name was not Bianca Kane.
It was Vanessa Kane.
Roman read the photograph of the bracelet.
“They planned to register Vanessa as the mother?”
Martin examined the trust language.
“Not legally. But a medical record created during emergency transfer could delay true identification and place Vanessa inside the maternal chain.”
The bracelet was one part of a larger substitution.
A false infant transfer authorization named Vanessa as gestational guardian.
The document claimed I had agreed to surrender medical authority before birth.
My biometric signature appeared beneath it.
The hidden procedure collected enough data to build the infant file.
Vanessa may have become the official woman beside the baby during the trust’s first verification.
Eleanor wanted me alive but legally absent.
Adrian wanted confusion long enough to control the shares.
Roman called the hospital security director.
“Lock every infant record connected to Kane, Bianca, Vanessa, Eleanor, Adrian, and the maternal trust. Require physical confirmation from Bianca and an independent judge.”
Dr. Brooks added another restriction.
“No transfer occurs without my signature and a second unaffiliated obstetrician.”
I added my own condition.
“Roman must not be the only family witness.”
He looked at me.
“You do not trust me?”
“I trust you. I do not trust systems that can create your signature.”
He nodded.
Martin became independent legal witness.
Detective Quinn became law enforcement witness.
The baby would not become property inside a room full of Kane relatives.
That night, the contractions returned.
The monitor dipped sharply.
Dr. Brooks entered with a surgical team.
“We may need to deliver now.”
Roman reached for me.
Before the nurses moved the bed, the hospital fire alarm activated.
A security alert appeared on the screen.
INFANT RECORD TRANSFER IN PROGRESS.
