Chapter 3 - The Camera Behind the Mirror

Nolan survived surgery.

The blade had missed his heart by less than an inch.

He could not speak for several hours, but he wrote two words on a hospital pad before sedation pulled him under.

NOT ELEANOR.

Roman read the message without reacting.

He folded the paper once and gave it to Martin.

The memory card from the dressing room camera remained sealed until state investigators, Martin, and a digital evidence technician could examine it together.

I watched from my hospital bed through a secure monitor.

The camera had been hidden behind the large mirror facing the salon chair. Eleanor installed it years earlier to record private fittings and jewelry consultations. Vanessa believed she controlled the room cameras through her phone.

She did not know the mirror system stored a local copy.

The footage began at 1:06 p.m.

I entered wearing the cream dress.

Eleanor followed.

Vanessa locked the door.

Dr. Reed placed the pill inside a silver dish beside a glass of water.

At 1:13, the fourth person arrived.

He wore a dark raincoat and a plain black mask covering the lower half of his face. Only his eyes and silver hair remained visible.

He entered through a private service door hidden behind the wardrobe.

Roman moved closer to the screen.

“I know that passage.”

“Who else knows it?” the detective asked.

“My mother. Vanessa. The head of security. Martin.”

Martin did not defend himself.

He simply stated that he had not been inside the estate that afternoon and could document his location.

The masked man used a key on the dressing room cabinet. He removed legal forms, an evidence envelope, and a small electronic tablet.

He remained outside the camera angle whenever possible.

His voice had been digitally distorted through a device clipped near his collar.

He instructed Eleanor.

“Begin with the medical statement.”

Eleanor placed papers in front of me.

I refused.

Vanessa pulled my arms behind the chair.

Dr. Reed administered the pill by force.

The masked man checked his watch while my head began falling forward.

“Do not let her lose full consciousness,” he said. “The statement requires responsiveness.”

Eleanor answered.

“She will cooperate after the first cut.”

Then she removed the scissors.

Roman turned away from the screen.

He pressed both hands against the hospital window and remained there while the video continued behind him.

I watched myself awaken.

I watched Vanessa hold my shoulders.

I watched Eleanor lift the first section of hair.

I had experienced the moment from inside terror and medication.

Seeing it from outside created a different kind of pain.

No one in the room looked confused.

They had rehearsed.

The masked man opened the guardianship form and pointed toward the signature line.

“Her hand can be guided if necessary.”

Eleanor said, “Roman will know.”

“He will believe she signed during a breakdown.”

“He knows her handwriting.”

“The signature is biometric.”

The electronic tablet could capture fingerprint pressure, face verification, and voice.

They planned to build a digital signature while I was sedated.

Vanessa moved the tablet near my face.

The system requested a phrase.

I refused to speak.

Eleanor cut another section of hair.

Vanessa struck me across the mouth.

I said the phrase after blood reached my chin.

The tablet confirmed identity.

Roman looked back at the screen.

“Was the document filed?”

Martin checked the emergency registry.

A temporary maternal incapacity petition had been submitted at 2:21 p.m.

My verified biometric identity appeared beneath it.

The petition stated that I feared I might harm myself during pregnancy and voluntarily requested supervision by Eleanor.

A second form transferred temporary prenatal medical authority to the Kane family physician.

A third authorized the estate security team to prevent me from leaving until evaluation.

They had created legal permission for the imprisonment while it was happening.

“Who received the filings?” I asked.

“A private judge used for emergency family matters,” Martin said. “The request was rejected because no independent physician supported it.”

“Dr. Reed signed.”

“His signature was missing from the final page.”

The masked man had prepared the structure but never completed the medical proof.

Why?

The video answered.

At 2:37, Nolan appeared at the hidden service door.

He had heard me scream.

The masked man drew a knife.

Nolan entered.

The camera captured only part of the struggle.

The blade struck him near the chest.

He fell against the mirror.

The masked man removed Nolan’s security card, wiped the knife, and entered Roman’s private override code into the wall panel.

The code disabled hall cameras and opened the nursery.

“He knew the code,” Roman said.

I had seen Roman use it only twice.

It required six numbers and a palm scan.

The masked man used a portable biometric patch to reproduce Roman’s palm pattern.

This was not family improvisation.

Someone had prepared technical access.

The man instructed Eleanor and Vanessa to move me outside before Roman reached the estate.

Eleanor asked how Roman had been alerted.

The masked man answered.

“Nolan sent the message before I stopped him.”

Nolan had saved me.

Vanessa dragged me from the chair.

Eleanor threw my shoes into the fireplace.

They moved me through the rear stairs.

Before leaving, the masked man entered the nursery with the electronic tablet and the sealed evidence envelope.

The camera recorded his final words.

“The child changes control only if she is born under the right medical authority.”

Then the mirror feed ended.

Dr. Brooks entered my room at the same moment.

The contractions had slowed, but one laboratory result remained abnormal.

Someone had given me repeated low doses of the same uterine medication for at least two weeks.

The pill that afternoon had not started the danger.

It had completed a longer pattern.

“What have you taken recently?” she asked.

“Only prenatal vitamins.”

Roman closed his eyes.

Eleanor had delivered a new bottle to our bedroom every Sunday.
