Chapter 5 - Cindy’s First Lie

Cindy did not deny editing the photograph.

She minimized.

“I cleaned it up.”

“You removed the clinic sign.”

“It was distracting.”

“You removed a pregnancy poster.”

“I didn’t know what it was.”

“You removed the wheelchair ramp and cropped it so Sally looked like she was leaving a hotel with him.”

Cindy’s jaw hardened.

“You were already suspicious.”

“No. You made me suspicious.”

“She was always at work.”

“She worked.”

“She came home late.”

“So did I.”

“She had secrets.”

“What secrets?”

Cindy pointed at the photograph.

“That man.”

“Her lawyer.”

“So she says.”

Garrett leaned forward.

“I met him.”

Cindy’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“Because Sally was in the soup line today.”

Silence.

Then:

“And?”

“She has a daughter.”

Cindy froze.

Garrett saw it.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“Mom.”

“I didn’t.”

“How old?”

Cindy did not answer.

Garrett whispered:

“You knew.”

She stood.

“This is ridiculous.”

“She mailed me a birth notice.”

“I don’t remember.”

“Certified. You signed.”

Cindy’s face changed.

“People sign for things.”

“What did you do with it?”

“Probably put it somewhere.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Garrett moved toward the old hallway cabinet.

Cindy stepped in front.

“Don’t.”

That confirmed.

He pushed past.

Not violently.

Opened drawers.

Bills.

Old school certificates from her principal years.

Tax records.

Then the bottom drawer.

A cardboard folder.

SALLY.

Garrett’s hands began shaking.

Inside:

The certified envelope.

Opened.

Lily’s newborn photograph.

The first pregnancy letter.

The yellow envelope Sally carried today was not the original? Wait Sally had yellow envelope. We need reconcile. Maybe Sally had a duplicate copy. Yes. Cindy had original. Garrett realizes Sally's envelope was her retained copy? But earlier he recognized seal opened and assumed Cindy opened. Sally could have retrieved original somehow? Hmm. Let's adjust: The envelope Sally carried was a duplicate she had kept, but said Cindy had original. Yet we wrote seal opened. Could be Sally's own copy opened. Fine.

Inside Cindy's drawer also:

A letter from Harbor Legal Aid.

A paternity notice.

A hospital billing statement.

And one handwritten note from Sally:

Garrett, Lily has your eyes.

Garrett sat on the floor.

Cindy said:

“She was manipulating you.”

“By having my child?”

“You don’t know she’s yours.”

“You knew she was pregnant before I threw her out.”

“She could have been lying.”

“Then why hide all this?”

Cindy’s voice rose.

“Because you were finally free!”

Garrett stared.

“Free from what?”

“A woman who made you feel small.”

There.

Not cheating.

Not theft.

The real grievance.

Sally earned more.

Made decisions faster.

People respected her.

Garrett sometimes complained.

Cindy listened.

Then turned insecurity into evidence.

“She thought she was better than you.”

“No.”

“She made more money.”

“So?”

“She controlled the house fund.”

“It was joint.”

“She corrected you in front of people.”

Garrett remembered.

Sally saying:

“The vendor quote is wrong, Garrett.”

At dinner once.

He had complained to Cindy.

Cindy stored every humiliation.

Then Garrett asked:

“Why take the $420,000?”

Cindy’s expression hardened.

“Because most of it would have ended up with her.”

“It was mostly hers.”

“I saved you five years of rent.”

“You never said we owed rent.”

“You lived in my property.”

“That isn’t permission to empty our account.”

Cindy looked away.

Then Garrett saw another document.

Account statement.

The $420,000 had not remained with Cindy.

Two days after transfer:

$300,000 moved again.
