Less than what the money might have become if invested for eight years.

Then the preschool.

Garrett drove past once with Lily.
“That used to be Grandma’s school.”

“No.”
“Why?”

Lily considered.
“That’s weird.”
“Yes.”

At fourteen, Lily asked to see.
Sally showed.
“This is why Dad thought you cheated?”

“Did you really think Mom liked that old guy?”
“Leland.”
“Yeah.”
“Yes.”
“He was like seventy.”

Garrett laughed.

“I was jealous before I saw the picture.”
“Of Mom?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She was better at some things.”
Lily stared.
“So?”

Garrett smiled sadly.
“So.”
Then Lily asked:
“Would you believe Grandma again?”
“Without checking?”
“No.”
“Would you believe Mom?”
“Without checking?”
She frowned.
Garrett answered:
“I would listen. Then check important facts.”
Good.
Trust is not blindness.
Then Leland died peacefully at eighty one.
Sally attended funeral.
Garrett sent flowers but did not attend.
