Chapter 22 - Lily Turns Eighteen
On Lily’s eighteenth birthday, Garrett gave her a folder.
Not money.
Documents.
DNA test.
Paternity acknowledgment.
First child support order.
A copy of his corrected bank affidavit.
And a letter.
She frowned.
“Why?”
“So you never have to hear the story from rumors.”
Then Sally gave her own folder.
Pregnancy letter.
Original clinic photo.
Cindy’s edited photo.
Certified mail receipt.
Lily stared.
“You both kept so much paper.”
Sally laughed.
“Legal trauma.”
Then Lily read Garrett’s letter.
Lily,
The first time I saw you, you were standing under a pharmacy awning asking your mother if she brought food.
I was serving free meals and had just insulted her.
Not flattering.
Then:

Lily cried.
Then she asked:
“Did Mom really never ask you for child support?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“She was scared.”
“Of you?”
“Of Grandma. And maybe of what I would do if Mom pulled me back into court.”
Lily looked at Sally.
“You should’ve.”
Sally smiled.
“I know more now.”
Then the trust? No big inheritance. Sally had an education account.
Lily received access to:
College savings around $96,000.
Not millions.
Built from recovered money, Sally, Garrett.
She said:
“Can I use it for art school?”
Sally and Garrett together:
“Yes.”
Then Garrett added:
“Read tuition numbers first.”
Lily rolled eyes.
Family healed enough to annoy normally.
Then Cindy gave Lily a birthday card.
Inside:
$50.
No giant check.
And handwritten:
Your mother protected you when I did not. Your father learned later. I am sorry I kept you from him.
