Chapter 15 - Garrett’s Apology

Garrett waited a year before asking Sally to hear a full apology.
Not because words needed twelve months.
Because he needed behavior first.
Paternity.
Support.
Visits.
Corrected bank statements.
Testimony.
Repayment.
Boundaries with Cindy.
Then he asked:
“Can I say something without you answering?”
Sally agreed.
They sat on a park bench while Lily played within view.
Garrett said:
“I blamed Mom for a long time because that let me imagine I was fooled instead of responsible.”
Sally looked ahead.
“I was fooled.”
Then:
“But I chose not to listen.”
Yes.
“I chose not to read your envelope.”
Yes.
“I chose not to check the bank.”
Yes.
“I chose not to look for you.”
That one hurt most.
Then:
“When Mom said you stole the money, I wanted it to be true because then I didn’t have to admit I threw out a pregnant wife over one photograph.”
Sally’s eyes filled.
Garrett continued.
“I am sorry.”
No:
But Mom.
No:
I was hurt.
Then:
“I’m sorry Lily had to grow up four years without me because I preferred being angry to being uncertain.”
Sally finally looked at him.
“That’s the first apology you’ve given me that isn’t about Cindy.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
Then:
“I don’t want you back.”
Sally’s expression sharpened.
He almost laughed.
“I mean I’m not apologizing to get the marriage back.”
“Good.”
“I destroyed that.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“I want to be a good father.”
“That’s separate.”
“I know.”
She nodded.
Then Lily ran over.
“Dad!”
The word froze him.
First time.
She had called him Garrett until then.
Garrett crouched.
“What?”
“Watch.”
She attempted a cartwheel.
Terrible.
He applauded.
Sally laughed.
That was perhaps the first moment the three of them occupied one space without history controlling every breath.
Not family restored.
A new configuration.
Then Garrett’s housing.
He moved out of Cindy’s property.
Rented his own apartment.
Why?
He realized he had never once lived without his mother or wife managing some part of his home.
At thirty six, he learned autopay.
Embarrassing.
Necessary.
He cooked badly.
Lily complained.
Sally refused to rescue.
Good.
Then Garrett opened his own bank statements every month.
