Chapter 22 - Caleb’s Daughter

Ava Ross contacted me one final time when Jake was thirty two.

She had found another box of Caleb’s personal belongings after her mother died.

Inside was a birthday card Caleb had intended to send me.

Never mailed.

Ethan,

If you ever become a dad, please don’t teach your kid that control means never feeling angry.

Teach him it means deciding what anger gets to do.

I sat for a long time.

Caleb had written before Jake existed.

Ava said:

“Take it.”

“I can’t.”

“He wrote to you.”

I accepted.

Then Jake read.

“Caleb predicted you.”

“He predicted everyone.”

Then:

“Do you miss?”

“Yes.”

“Still?”

“Yes.”

Time does not erase.

Then Ava told Jake:

“Your grandfather didn’t get to decide who my father was.”

Jake:

“What?”

“Harold’s crime became how people knew Caleb. I hate that.”

Jake understood.

He had once been “boy beaten by grandfather.”

Not all.

He was engineer.

Father.

Terrible cook.

Loved baseball more than soccer now.

He told Ava:

“I hate when people call me keycard kid.”

She laughed.

“Then don’t.”

No media.

No memoir.

The story remained family.

Then Caleb’s card.

Federal evidence archive eventually deaccessioned certain physical items after statutory retention? Maybe unrealistic. Instead it remained government property. Fine.

We never saw again.

May you like

No need.

The thing mattered because of truth, not ownership.
