Chapter 12 - Christine Comes Home From Custody
Christine served thirteen months before transition to supervised release and community supervision.
She completed counseling.
No violations.
She moved into a small apartment.
She did not ask family court for immediate shared custody.
Instead she petitioned for structured therapeutic contact.
Jake was ten.
He agreed to one meeting.
I waited outside.
Dr. Ellis sat with them.
Christine looked older.
No prison drama.
No makeup almost.
“Hi, Jake.”
“Hi.”
“I’m not going to ask hug.”
“Good.”
Then silence.
Jake asked:
“Why did you marry Dad?”
Christine’s face changed.
“Because I loved him.”
“Grandpa told you talk to him.”
“Yes.”
“So you lied.”
“At beginning, yes.”
“Did Dad know?”
“No.”
“Did you tell Grandpa secrets?”
“Only that Dad had left old work and didn’t talk about it.”
“Why?”
“Because I was trying to make my father happy.”
Jake frowned.
“You always did.”
Christine cried.
“Yes.”
Then:
“Why didn’t you make me happy?”
Hard.
She did not defend.
“I thought you would be okay after. I was wrong.”
“After what?”
“After Dad calmed down.”
“Grandpa.”
“Yes.”
Then Jake:
“You picked Grandpa.”
Christine whispered:
“Yes.”
That direct admission mattered.
“Would you again?”
“No.”
“How know?”
“I already lost things by choosing him and I still testified against him. I had to learn too late.”
Jake:
“Dad didn’t hit him.”
“No.”
“You thought he would.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your dad used to get very angry.”
“Did he hit you?”
“No.”
“Grandpa?”
“No.”
“Then you made Dad worse in your head.”
Christine stared.
“My father helped me do that.”
Then:
“And I let him.”
Good.
The meeting ended without hug.
Second meeting months later.
They talked school.
Third:
Christine brought no gifts.
Jake eventually asked:
“Can we get pizza?”
They did in therapist approved setting.
Trust is mundane.
Then family court.
After a year, Christine received limited unsupervised daytime contact.
No overnights yet.
She followed.
No pressure.
At twelve, Jake stayed one night.
Called me twice.
Fine.
Then gradually alternate weekends.
Not because Christine’s conviction erased.
Because courts evaluate present safety and child interest.
She remained his mother.
I disliked some.
But Jake wanted.
I did not weaponize my anger.
Then divorce finalized.
Christine returned to using maiden name? Bennett tied to father. She chose Christine Walker? After divorce maybe she used maternal surname Hayes? Let's say Christine Hale, her mother’s maiden surname, after petition. She did not want Bennett. Fine.
We separated finances.
Sold marital home.
Jake and I bought smaller house near school.
Christine received fair equity.
No punitive.
Then Brian’s release later.
Scott earlier.
No contact Jake unless requested.
He did not request.
Harold remained incarcerated.
Gray too.
Mason continued audit.
No more hidden federal monsters emerged.
The Nightglass network was not endless.
The archive contained enough to close remaining old financial matters.
