Chapter 18 - Mason Retires

Mason retired at sixty two.
He invited me and Jake to a small gathering.
No speeches about secret missions.
Mostly bad cake.
Coworkers.
His wife.
Grandkids.
Jake looked around.
“This is Voice Guy?”
Mason pointed.
“I have a name.”
“Debatable.”
Then Mason gave me an envelope.
Inside:
A copy of Caleb’s old note.
WALKER TOO HOT. KEEP HIM OUT UNTIL VERIFIED.
I stared.
“Why give?”
“Because you finally became insultingly calm.”
“Thanks.”
Then another line copied:
Ethan’s good when he chooses next move.
I swallowed.
Caleb had written that later.
Mason said:
“He believed in you. He just knew what anger did.”
Jake read.
“Dad was dramatic.”
“Still.”
Then Mason apologized to Jake.
“For what?”
“For dragging your dad’s old life back?”
Jake shrugged.
“I dragged.”
“No. You were child.”
Mason looked at me.
“We adults love assigning children roles because it makes stories cleaner.”
Exactly.
Then he said:
“You found card. You told truth. That’s all you were responsible for.”
Jake nodded.
Good.
Then Mason moved to Arizona.
We stayed in touch.
No new operations.
No secret calls.
The encrypted app on my phone had one contact.
After Mason retired, he told me:
“Delete it.”
I did.
The icon disappeared.
Ten years earlier I thought deleting that app buried life.
Now deleting it meant the life had actually ended.
No unfinished case.
No hidden network.
No man waiting.
Then Jake joked:
“What if another key shows?”
“No.”
“Box?”
“No.”
“Secret room?”
May you like
“I’m moving.”
He laughed.
