Chapter 14 - The Classified Room Becomes Evidence

The secret room under Harold’s garage was dismantled after trials.

Not dramatically.

Investigators catalogued.

Returned lawful property.

Destroyed contraband records under court order after appeals.

Removed server racks.

The Nightglass wall plate went into federal evidence.

Caleb’s card remained archived until final case closure.

The house itself became subject to forfeiture only in part? Since room used criminal evidence concealment, but property maybe jointly owned Harold and wife. Harold’s wife? We haven't mentioned grandmother. Perhaps she died years earlier. Fine.

Harold solely owned.

The government did not automatically seize entire house for old docs. State placed lien for restitution/legal. Eventually sold by appointed conservator to pay obligations and property costs.

A family bought.

They renovated garage.

Filled lower room with concrete or converted storage.

Jake never returned.

He did not need.

Then the card.

When appeals ended, Mason asked if I wanted to see it before archive destruction? The government likely retains. We can say evidence disposition later allowed Caleb’s daughter to request the physical card? Maybe not. Better it is permanently transferred to federal historical evidence archive, not family. Jake did not keep.

He asked once:

“Can I have?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“It belongs evidence.”

“It saved us.”

“You saved yourself by carrying.”

He shrugged.

“It was shiny.”

Good.

Then Caleb’s family.

His daughter, Ava, now adult, contacted me after conviction.

We had not spoken in years.

She said:

“I heard a child found card.”

“Yes.”

“Your son?”

“Yes.”

She cried.

“Dad kept that card in wallet.”

I did not know.

Then:

“Does Jake know my father?”

“Only stories.”

“Tell him Caleb hated mushrooms.”

I laughed.

“That’s legacy?”

“Better than warehouse.”

Yes.

Ava visited once.

She brought a photo of Caleb coaching softball.

Jake said:

“He looks less spy.”

Everyone laughed.

No one made Jake responsible for solving Caleb’s death.

He stumbled onto evidence.

Professionals did rest.

Then the official federal report corrected Caleb’s line of duty death circumstances.

Not “accidental electrical fire.”

Now:

Death resulting from criminal obstruction and deliberate evidence destruction.

His family received corrected honors and benefits adjustment.

No huge money.

A plaque? Maybe.

I attended memorial.

Mason.

Ava.

Jake at fourteen chose to come.

He stood beside me.

When Caleb’s name read, Jake squeezed my hand.

No dramatic speech.

Then afterward:

“Dad.”

“Yes?”

“Did this close your old life?”

I looked at Mason.

He smiled.

“Yes.”

“Promise?”

“Yes.”

This time I meant institutionally too.

I was not rejoining.

Mason did not ask.

May you like

The task force existed only as archive.

Nightglass was closed for real.
