Chapter 8 - The Vanguards Close Ranks

Money protects people most effectively when it buys time.

The Vanguard family hired lawyers.

Public relations.

Crisis advisers.

Not bribed judges.

Not bought police.

Just competent defense.

Marcus and Celeste’s aunt Diana Vanguard, current chair of Vanguard Group, released a statement:

“The family does not condone violence and will cooperate with lawful investigations.”

No mention Maya.

Then privately, family attorney contacted Angela.

Could all civil matters resolve confidentially?

Maya:

“No.”

Again.

Then Marcus’s mother, Vivian Vanguard, asked to visit.

Maya refused.

Vivian sent letter.

“I am horrified.”

Then:

“Please remember Marcus has never been violent before.”

Not helpful.

Then:

“Celeste has always struggled with temper.”

Also not enough.

Maya did not respond.

Then Vanguard Group board suspended Marcus and Celeste from all fiduciary and executive roles pending audit.

They were not running entire company anyway.

Their personal family status did not guarantee office.

Good governance after scandal.

Then Trust court.

Harbor Fiduciary’s interim review estimated direct economic loss from questionable related-party transactions at between $1.1m and $1.8m depending recovery.

Not six million.

Some loans still secured.

Some performing.

Potential exposure bigger.

Actual impairment smaller.

Important.

Then independent appraisal of North Harbor project.

Value enough to cover part of bridge loan.

The trust was not destroyed.

Then Arthur explained to Maya:

“The wealthy family isn't going bankrupt.”

“I don't care.”

“I know.”

“You sound disappointed.”

He smiled.

“Your grandfather taught us not to confuse punishment with accounting.”

Then family trust sought restitution/surcharge against Marcus and Celeste.

No unborn baby received money.

No Maya access.

Then a new twist.

The $3.4m direct loan documents had a third signature:

Vivian Vanguard.

Marcus’s mother.

She had served as family advisory committee member.

Did she know?

She claimed she signed after Celeste said independent review completed.

No proof she knew missing.

Could be negligence.

Then email showed she asked:

“Has Sloan approved?”

Celeste replied:

“Yes, verbally.”

False.

Trust protector Judith Sloan denied.

Celeste admitted she lied.

Vivian not charged.

Could face civil fiduciary consequences.

Family not monolithic.

Then Maya asked:

“Why did Celeste hate me before pregnancy?”

Because class?

Partly.

But Celeste’s emails to friends:

“Marcus married a nurse’s daughter who thinks kindness is personality.”

Cruel.

Then:

“She’ll leave when she realizes we aren't giving her anything.”

Maya had not asked.

Celeste resented not being needed.

Then one email after Maya refused trust acknowledgment:

“She has Arthur Carter whispering in her ear now.”

Arthur laughed when he saw.

“I whispered by email in 12-point font.”

Then:

“Why were they afraid of you?”

“Because I read.”

That was Daddy’s lesson too.

Then criminal plea discussions.

Celeste offered to plead guilty to aggravated assault/reckless endangerment and obstruction? She didn't obstruct. She cooperated. Prosecutor wanted felony assault.

Sentence possible 4-7 years.

Her cooperation against Marcus could reduce.

Maya was asked input.

She said:

“I don't want her walking away because she helped after.”

Prosecutor agreed.

No immunity.

Then Marcus’s case.

He refused plea admitting assault on Celeste.

He would admit false report and tampering but claimed fall accident.

Prosecutor rejected partial deal.

Trial likely.

Then Maya’s pregnancy hit twelve weeks.

First trimester screening normal.

No guarantee future.

But odds improved.

She chose name not yet.

Then one night she said:

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“If it’s a girl, Evy.”

“No.”

She laughed.

“Why?”

“One Evelyn in family enough.”

Then:

“What about Walter if boy?”

I cried.

Our father.

The man who taught us paper.

Maybe.

Then Maya said:

“I think I want a girl.”

“Why?”

May you like

“So I can teach her being gentle doesn’t mean staying.”

That hurt and healed simultaneously.
