Chapter 15 - Marcus Returns

Marcus served just under nine years of his effective ten-year sentence before transition and credits, followed by supervised release.
No need exact. Let's say he completed 9 years 2 months custodial before supervised release under lawful structure.
Lila was nine.
Maya thirty-eight.
I seventy-two.
Victim services notified.
Marcus moved to supervised housing.
No contact with Maya/Lila except by court authorization.
He found a logistics analyst job through reentry program.
Not Vanguard.
His family shares remained in trust structures but distributions subject surcharge/restitution and governance restrictions.
He was not poor.
He was also not in control.
Then he asked family court for therapeutic contact with Lila after six months.
Maya expected.
GAL updated.
Therapist evaluated Lila.
Question:
Does Lila want?
She said:
“I want to know what he looks like in real life.”
Not relationship.
Court authorized two supervised therapeutic sessions initially.
Maya did not attend first.
Lila came home quiet.
“What did he say?”
“He said hi.”
“Anything else?”
“He cried.”
Then:
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
Second session:
Lila asked:
“Why didn’t you stop Aunt Celeste?”
Marcus answered:
“Because I was afraid and selfish.”
“Were you scared of her?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“Scared of losing money and getting in trouble.”
Lila stared.
“So you chose money?”
“In that moment, yes.”
No euphemism.
Then:
“Did you want me?”
Marcus cried.
“I was afraid of what your birth would expose. That is different from not wanting you, but I understand why it sounds same.”
Lila said:
“Do you love me?”
“Yes.”
“Do you know me?”
“No.”
Good.
Then court allowed monthly supervised visits if Lila wanted.
She did.
Eventually.
Not every month.
Sometimes canceled.
Marcus accepted.
No guilt.
Then Maya agreed to one meeting with Marcus after ten years.
Neutral mediator.
No Lila.
He apologized.
Maya asked:
“Why did you tell Celeste there would be no baby while telling me we were trying?”
Marcus looked down.
“Because I wanted both lives.”
“Explain.”
“I wanted you. Marriage. Child.”
Then:
“And I wanted family trust problem to stay hidden.”
“So you lied to whichever woman was in front of you.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Did you ever consider asking me to wait?”
“Yes.”
“Why not?”
“Because you would ask why.”
There.
Truth required explanation.
He avoided.
Then:
“Did you hope I miscarried after assault?”
Long silence.
“For minutes that night, yes.”
Maya went still.
Marcus cried.
“I hated myself almost immediately.”
She stood as if leaving.
Then sat again.
“Why tell me?”
“You asked.”
Good.
Then:
“I did not cause Celeste to assault you, but when you were hurt I saw miscarriage as escape from audit. That is one of worst things I have ever thought.”
Maya whispered:
“You were my husband.”
“I know.”
Then:
“I forgive you.”
He stared.
“But I will never trust you with me.”
“I understand.”
“And Lila decides her relationship.”
“Yes.”
“No appeals through your mother.”
“Yes.”
No hug.
Meeting over.
Then Maya came to my house.
I held her.
She said:
“Mom, forgiveness feels terrible.”
I laughed softly through tears.
“Sometimes.”
Then:
“Do you forgive him?”
“No.”
I was allowed my own timeline.
May you like
Later I did.
But not that day.
