Chapter 7 - Marcus’s Second Story
Marcus gave no interview for weeks.
Then his legal strategy shifted.
He accepted that Celeste assaulted Maya.
He denied complicity.
He claimed he froze.
Trauma response.
He claimed when Maya fled he tried to de-escalate Celeste.
She attacked him.
She fell accidentally.
He panicked and wrongly assumed Maya’s earlier fight had caused Celeste’s head injury.
That story had problems.
Audio.
Deleted security.
Draft narrative.
But it was more plausible than first.
Then his attorney said:
“Marcus did not touch Maya.”
Maya remembered him blocking front door.
Was that physical restraint?
He stood there and said:
“You’re not leaving until you calm down.”
Maya tried to pass.
He caught her forearm.
Then Celeste grabbed again.
That was contact.
Bruise on Maya’s forearm possibly Marcus.
No definitive pattern.
Then Maya remembered something she had not said initially.
After falling, she reached for phone on side table.
Marcus kicked it away.
It slid.
Celeste stepped on it.
The broken phone later recovered from mansion.
Forensic analysis.
Cracked but data accessible.
There was an unsent audio recording.
Maya had accidentally activated voice memo while reaching?
Maybe she had started recording earlier when Celeste yelling. Let's make deliberate: when Celeste began shouting about trust, Maya pressed record because Marcus had denied prior insults. It captured.

Celeste:
“You think carrying Marcus’s baby makes you one of us?”
Maya:
“I am his wife.”
Celeste:
“That does not make you Vanguard.”
Marcus:
“Enough.”
Maya:
“Tell her.”
Marcus:
“Tell her what?”
Maya:
“That we wanted this baby.”
Silence.
Maya:
“Marcus.”
Then Marcus:
“This is not the time.”
Celeste laughs.
“You really didn’t tell her?”
Maya:
“Tell me what?”
Celeste:
“He promised there wouldn’t be a baby until North Harbor was clean.”
Then chaos.
Maya:
“What?”
Marcus:
“Give me the phone.”
The recording captures a struggle.
Maya:
“Don’t touch me.”
Then loud impact.
End.
That audio did not capture stair fall after phone damaged.
But it established confrontation and Marcus grabbing phone.
Then financial motive stronger.
North Harbor.
A Vanguard North project had a $2.2m bridge loan partly guaranteed by Descendant Reserve.
It was in default.
If independent trustee reviewed at birth, Marcus and Celeste feared demand to unwind guarantee.
Potential personal liability.
Not guaranteed ruin.
But severe.
Then Arthur said:
“They weren't afraid your baby would inherit their fortune tomorrow.”
“They were afraid another fiduciary would look at what they did yesterday.”
Exactly.
Then trust court audit.
Preliminary findings:
Some related-party investments could have been profitable if properly approved.
Others not.
Breach tied to conflicts and missing consent.
No evidence yet of outright embezzlement.
Then a forensic accountant found $380,000 in “management fees” paid from Vanguard North to Marcus personally over two years.
He disclosed some but not all to trust committee.
Celeste received $610,000.
Could be legitimate compensation.
But conflict.
Then Marcus emailed accountant:
“Keep family reserve exposure out of personal net-worth schedule until after refinance.”
Concealment.
Then state securities/fiduciary investigators opened separate matter.
No arrest yet.
Then Celeste decided to cooperate more.
She admitted she and Marcus had split management fees.
She insisted all services real.
Maybe.
Then:
“Did Marcus ever suggest harming Maya or baby before assault?”
“No.”
Important.
No preplanned pregnancy attack.
Celeste’s assault was impulsive rage.
Marcus’s complicity was opportunistic and cowardly.
Then:
“Did he tell you he wanted children?”
“No.”
“He told me they were waiting five years.”
Maya and Marcus had discussed trying now.
Lies.
Then Celeste said:
“After Maya fled, I wanted to confess.”
Why?
“She looked… broken.”
Not redemption.
Shock.
Then:
“Marcus said if Maya miscarried, the trust problem disappeared and no one would know why she fell.”
That sentence would later devastate jury.
Then Celeste shouted:
“You’re sick.”
Marcus grabbed.
She fell.
Whether he intended severe injury disputed.
Then Celeste said:
“When I woke for a second, he was holding fireplace tool.”
She did not see him strike.
Maybe staging blood by placing near wound.
Forensics later found impact pattern on tool inconsistent with causing skull fracture? Could be blood transfer from floor/hand, no dent. So likely staged.
Then Michael? Marcus deleted security.
More obstruction.
Charges expanded.
Marcus arrested on:
Assault on Celeste causing serious bodily injury.
Obstruction.
Evidence tampering.
False report.
Unlawful restraint/coercion of Maya.
Conspiracy? Not with Celeste to assault. No.
Financial charges pending separate.
He posted? Wealthy, serious charges. Court set high secured bond and GPS/no-contact. He posted through family funds? Could be. Let's say released to monitored residence after bond, surrender passport.
Maya heard.
She did not panic.
Protective order.
Then ultrasound at ten weeks.
Baby growing.
Still viable.
Maya smiled for first time.
Then asked:
“Can Marcus ever get custody?”
Angela said:
“If child is born, court decides based on best interests and evidence. His conduct matters. Nothing is automatic.”
Maya nodded.
No promises.
Then:
“I want him to know baby.”
That surprised me.
“Why?”
“Not now.”
Then:
“But if he changes someday, I don’t want fear making every decision.”
