Chapter 20 - Marcus Tells the Whole Truth
Marcus was sixty-three when he requested one final mediated family conversation with Maya and Lila together.
Not required.
Both agreed.
I did not attend.
He said:
“I want to correct one thing.”
What?
“People keep saying I froze while Celeste attacked Maya.”
Maya stared.
“You did.”
“I did more.”
Silence.
“I moved toward you once.”
Maya remembered.
“I thought you were helping.”
“I wasn't.”
He swallowed.
“I grabbed your arm because you were trying to get past me.”
Maya closed eyes.
“I know.”
“I told myself I was keeping you from escalating.”
Then:
“I was helping trap you.”
Yes.
Then:
“I did not kick you. I did not push you down stairs. But I made it harder to leave and chose my sister over your safety.”
Then Lila:
“Why say now?”
“Because ‘I froze’ makes me sound less active.”
Good.
Then:
“Anything else?”
Marcus looked at Maya.
“After you left, when Celeste said ambulance, I considered letting you bleed somewhere because I thought it would buy time.”
Maya shook.
“I didn’t know where you were. I told myself you would go hospital if needed.”
Then:
“I deleted video before calling 911 because I wanted to protect trust scheme.”
Then:
“When Celeste fell, I blamed you because you were already the family outsider.”
That was the whole moral.
Then Lila:
“Do you want something from us?”
“No.”
Maya:
“Then why now?”
“I am getting older. I don't want my last version to be sanitized.”
That was fair.
Then they left.
Lila told me later:
“I think I trust him more after hearing worse.”
I understood.
Truth can feel safer than flattering lie.
Then Marcus updated estate.
Transparent.
Lila would inherit a share of his personal non-trust estate at death, subject debts, along with charities/other family depending. No conditions based on contact.
He told her.
She said:
“You can leave to whoever.”
“I know.”
Then he eventually died at seventy-one from heart disease.
No conspiracy.
Lila attended.
Maya did not.
She sent flowers.
At funeral, Celeste already gone? We said she died 74 maybe Marcus63 then later 8 years to71, Celeste older by1, could be alive 72. Our earlier said Celeste died at74, so still alive. But Lila had no relationship. Fine. Celeste attends.
No scene.
Marcus’s estate after taxes/debts:
Lila received around $1.8m? Wealthy family shares. Could be more. But trust/inherited shares maybe estate value high. Yet if family billionaire, personal estate could be several million. Need not be huge. Let's say around $4.6m net, Lila one-third = $1.53m, remainder charities and family. This is plausible. But perhaps his inherited Vanguard shares could be worth far more. Could be held in separate dynasty trusts not estate. So personal probate modest. Fine.
Lila accepted.
No "blood money."
It was lawful inheritance.
She used some for home mortgage, invested rest, donated portion to domestic violence services? Could, but avoid trauma destiny. She chose one charitable gift in Marcus's name maybe not. Let's say she kept/invested; no moral performance.
Then she said:
“Dad’s money doesn't change what happened.”
Maya:
“Correct.”
Then:
“Rejecting it wouldn't change either.”
Correct.
No purity tests.
Then Celeste sent Lila a letter after Marcus death.
Lila returned unopened.
Her boundary.
Celeste respected.
Years later, when Celeste died, no hidden bequest to Lila.
