Chapter 14 - Celeste Comes Home

Celeste’s release made Maya physically ill for a week.

Not because threat.

Because memory.

Victim notification arrived.

No-contact order continued during supervision.

Celeste lived in condo across state.

Her wealth remained.

Her criminal record remained.

She had resigned trust roles forever.

Then media? Maybe family name public. Could be. She avoided.

A year passed.

No contact.

Then supervision officer reported compliance.

No incidents.

Then Celeste asked through mediator for one meeting.

Maya said no.

Two years later, asked again.

Maya said:

“Why?”

Mediator relayed:

“She wants to answer questions if you have any. No request relationship.”

Maya considered.

Lila six.

Then agreed to one video session.

I was not present.

Maya later told me.

First question:

“Did you want me to lose baby?”

Celeste cried.

“At that moment, I wanted the problem to disappear. I did not think clearly enough to separate that from the baby.”

“That is not answer.”

Celeste swallowed.

“When I kicked at you, I knew you were pregnant. I knew I could hurt pregnancy. Yes.”

Direct.

Maya shook.

Then:

“Did Marcus tell you?”

“No.”

“Did he ask you to stop?”

“No.”

“Did you think he wanted baby gone?”

“I think he cared more about trust exposure than whether pregnancy survived in those minutes.”

Painful.

Then:

“Why did you hate me before?”

“Class.”

Maya blinked.

Celeste did not soften.

“I thought Marcus marrying someone outside our world made us vulnerable.”

“Vulnerable how?”

“To being used.”

“Did I ever ask for money?”

“No.”

“Then why keep believing?”

“Because belief served me.”

Good.

Then:

“I could treat you badly without feeling cruel if I called you a gold digger first.”

Maya cried.

Then:

“Do you forgive yourself?”

“No.”

“Do you want me to?”

“I want you free. I don't know if that means forgiveness.”

Maya ended.

No hug.

No reconciliation.

But afterward she told me:

“I forgive her.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want Celeste inside every staircase.”

I understood.

Then did she allow Lila contact?

No.

Celeste was aunt.

No need.

At age eight, Lila learned Celeste existed.

Maya told:

“She hurt me when I was pregnant with you.”

Lila:

“Why?”

“She was angry and made a terrible choice.”

“Did she go jail?”

“Yes.”

“Do we see her?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

Children accept boundaries without requiring melodrama.

Then Lila asked:

“Can I see picture?”

Maya showed.

No demon face.

Just woman.

Important.

Then Marcus.

He still had three years before release.

His letters became more accountable.

One:

I told myself standing still meant I wasn't the one hurting you.

I know now that I helped by blocking the door and refusing help.

Then:

I blamed you for Celeste because I was afraid of what the truth would cost.

Then:

I loved you and acted without love.

Maya read.

No response.

Then one:

I know Lila does not owe me relationship.

Maya kept for later.

Maybe.

Then trust.

Lila at eight had education account distributions modest.

Harbor paid for summer language program? Not needed. Trust mostly invested.

Balance around $12.6m after recoveries/gains and distributions.

Future descendants could join.

Not hers alone.

Then Arthur retired at seventy-six.

He handed Maya no dossier.

“I am done.”

“Finally.”

Then:

“What did Daddy teach?”

Maya answered:

“Preserve first.”

Arthur:

“And?”

“Don't confuse anger with evidence.”

Good.

Then he smiled.

May you like

“Carter enough.”

The family identity Maya wanted for Lila was forming.
