Chapter 8 - The Dinner Was Planned
Emma’s phone recording began at 7:14 p.m.
Dinner started 6:50.
At 7:02, Margaret asked:
“Did Rebecca contact you?”
Emma denied.
Because she feared.
At 7:05, Caleb placed his phone face down and asked:
“Where is Dad’s blue ledger?”
Emma said:
“I don’t know.”
At 7:08, Margaret announced to table:
“Emma has been snooping through Thomas’s private records.”
Susan:
“Margaret, maybe this isn't dinner conversation.”
Margaret:
“It has to be witnessed.”
There.
At 7:11, Emma stood.
“I’m going home.”
Caleb moved into doorway.
“You’re not driving upset.”
Emma:
“Move.”
Caleb:
“Sit down.”
At 7:14, recording starts.
Then phone taken.
At 7:18, Susan texted Rebecca from bathroom:
Come now. It’s happening.
At 7:31, Rebecca arrived outside side patio.
At 7:33, her video began.
At 7:35, Margaret grabbed Emma’s wrist when she tried go around table.
Emma pulled free, crouched behind chair.
Caleb caught arm.
Margaret accused her of “acting crazy.”
Then plate.
Why fish bones?
Margaret had been stripping bones from baked fish while arguing.
She shoved plate toward Emma, saying:
“If you’re going to behave like a scavenger digging through other people’s things, eat scraps too.”
Cruel improvisation.
Not preplanned torture device.
Then Emma ducked under table.
Margaret grabbed hair, pulled.
Caleb held arm.
At 7:37, Daniel returned.
Four minutes.
Four minutes six adults watched.
Then prosecutor had timeline.
Charges.
Then defense.
Margaret claimed:
She was trying to get Emma out from under table.
Fish plate was knocked during struggle.
Cruel words taken out context.
Caleb claimed:
He restrained Emma to prevent fall because pregnant.
He took phone to de-escalate unauthorized recording.
He stood doorway because wanted stop her driving while distressed.
Each explanation individually plausible enough to argue.
Together with recordings, weak.
Then prior home incident.
No video of shove.
Emma testimony.
Bruise documented only later.
Doorbell shows Margaret entering.
Texts after:
Margaret to Emma:
You should thank me I didn’t tell Daniel how hysterical you got over a box.
Emma:
Do not use key without asking again.
Margaret:
It's my son’s house too.
There.
Explicit no permission.
Then Margaret entered again hospital night.
After being told not? Daniel had not texted yet perhaps. But Emma told him and police complaint likely. Margaret knew conflict. The entry was unauthorized and to retrieve ledger. Strong.
Then corporate counsel found something else.
Caleb had sent family an unsigned draft titled:
Statement Regarding Emma Carter’s Conduct
Prepared two days before dinner.
It described:
“Erratic emotional accusations.”
“Obsessive focus on family trust.”
“Unauthorized removal of Thomas Carter records.”
“Pregnancy-related instability.”
Lines for witnesses.
No one signed yet.
This was why six people invited.
They wanted witnesses to sign after conversation.
Not to declare her incompetent legally.
To build paper defense.
Then one line:
If Emma later alleges mistreatment, attendees can confirm she was highly agitated and physically uncooperative.
I stared.
They anticipated allegation.
Before physical attack.
Then Emma whispered:
“They were preparing to call me liar before they did anything.”
Yes.
Then Rebecca found old document from three years earlier.
Title:

Same formatting.
Same phrases:
“Erratic.”
“Obsessive.”
“Hostile.”
“Medically unstable.”
Signed by Margaret.
