Chapter 11 - Margaret on Trial
Emma testified for ninety minutes.
She was thirty-eight weeks pregnant.
Breaks.
Water.
No theatrics.
She described first home incident.
Emergency key.
Ledger.
Shove into dresser.
Threat that family would call her unstable.
Then dinner.
Caleb taking phone.
Door.
Margaret pulling.
Fish bones.
Under table.
Then Daniel arriving.
Defense:
“You disliked Margaret?”
“After she assaulted me, yes.”
“Before?”
“We had conflict.”
“You secretly communicated with Rebecca?”
“Yes.”
“You withheld that from husband?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I was afraid he would tell Margaret.”
I closed eyes.
Truth.
Defense used.
“Doesn’t that show you were deceptive?”
Emma answered:
“It shows I was afraid.”
Then:
“You believed family financial misconduct existed?”
“I believed questions existed.”
“Wanted expose?”
“I wanted my mother-in-law out of my house.”
Simple.
Then prior bruise.
No contemporary report.
Defense suggested accidental.
Emma had text:
Do not use key again. You hurt my arm today.
Margaret response:
Stop dramatizing. I barely touched you.
There.
Then Rebecca.
Defense painted bitter former employee.
She admitted.
“Yes, I was bitter.”
Did she film from outside without permission?
Susan had opened side gate and invited onto property? Susan wasn't owner, but guest. Trespass relevance not huge. Even if recording legality, video without audio from visible patio likely admissible depending. She had given to police; court ruled.
Rebecca testified death lie.
Margaret objected relevance? Limited to pattern of discrediting witness and motive, not as separate crime.
Then Susan.
“I sat there too long.”
Defense:
“You are trying reduce guilt.”
“Yes.”
“Did Margaret plan fish bones?”
“No.”
“Did she tell anyone to hurt Emma before dinner?”
“No.”
Important.
The assault escalated, not premeditated physical attack.
Then Dr. Pierce.
Injuries consistent with force described, but could not assign each bruise to person beyond timing.
Baby unaffected based monitoring.
Then Daniel photos.
I testified.
Defense asked:
“You shoved Caleb?”

Then corporate motive.

Harbor State officer briefly established:
First grandchild birth required independent audit.
Margaret knew.

No claim audit proved criminal theft.
Then Margaret testified.
Against counsel advice maybe.

“Emma was tearing my family apart.”
She admitted using key.
Why?
“My son gave it.”

Why not ask Daniel?

“I pushed plate away.”
Audio:
“Eat scraps.”
She looked down.
Then:
“Were you trying to humiliate her?”
Long pause.
“Yes.”
There.
Why?
“I wanted her to admit Rebecca had ledger.”
Then:
“Did you believe pregnancy made her unstable?”
“No.”
Court silent.
“You said it.”
“I wanted others to believe.”
That admission ended much.
Then:
“Why?”
“Because if she accused me, I wanted people to question her.”
No sophisticated defense.
Truth.
Then jury.
Guilty:
Assault.
Coercion.
Unlawful restraint as accomplice with Caleb.
Obstruction/evidence tampering related removal of ledger and post-incident narrative.
Criminal trespass for later unauthorized home entry? Depending. Let's include a lesser trespass conviction.
Acquitted of a more serious aggravated assault count requiring intent to cause serious bodily injury because evidence did not prove.
Sentence:
Six years eight months effective custody, followed by probation/no contact.
She was sixty-three.
Then she addressed Emma:
“I was wrong.”
No grand apology.
Emma looked away.
Then Margaret taken.
I did not feel triumph.
Only emptiness.
Then hospital called.
Emma had left courtroom? She wasn't there verdict maybe. She was at home. I received text:
