Chapter 17 - Rebecca Comes Back to the Table

Rebecca refused Carter family dinners for fifteen years.

Then Lily graduated high school.

Emma invited.

Rebecca said:

“Who else?”

Susan.

Daniel.

Emma.

Lily.

No Margaret? Emma had limited contact but maybe she can attend? At graduation dinner, Emma chose no Margaret to avoid tension. Fine.

Rebecca came.

No window.

No filming.

She sat.

Fish on menu? Lily chose restaurant with grilled fish.

I noticed.

Emma noticed.

Neither commented.

Then Lily asked Rebecca:

“Were you really dead?”

Rebecca laughed.

“No.”

“Why Grandma say?”

“Because she was angry I left and easier to erase me than explain.”

“Did Dad believe?”

“Yes.”

I winced.

Rebecca added:

“He was very good at believing whatever meant he didn't have to fight.”

Lily looked at me.

“Harsh.”

“Accurate.”

We laughed.

Then she asked:

“Why were you outside that night?”

“Susan called. I wanted proof before walking in.”

“Why not rescue?”

Rebecca paused.

“I called police. Your father arrived first.”

Then:

“I also was afraid.”

Important.

No hero rewrite.

Then Lily:

“Did you think Mom would lose me?”

“I worried she could be badly hurt.”

Then:

“Did you hate Grandma?”

“For years.”

“Now?”

“No.”

“Forgive?”

“Yes.”

“See?”

“No.”

Different.

Then Rebecca returned to Vermont.

She never rejoined company.

She had invested settlement years earlier, lived comfortably.

Later at seventy-six, she developed cancer.

Ordinary.

Emma visited.

I did too.

Rebecca said:

“I’m glad Margaret didn't actually get to write obituary this time.”

Dark.

We laughed.

She died months later.

No secret file.

No final ledger.

Her will left most to charities and friends, small sentimental bequest to Lily:

Crescent brooch.

Lily wore once to graduation ceremony? She already graduated. Maybe wedding later.

No hidden wealth.

Then company named an ethics award after Rebecca? That might be performative. She explicitly asked no.

We respected.

A small plaque in records department acknowledged her years as controller.

Enough.

Then Susan died later? Not relevant.

Rebecca's story ended not as ghost but as woman who got ordinary life after leaving.
