Chapter 23 - The Woman in the Reflection

Lily once asked for photograph that started everything.

The dining photo.

Reflection of Rebecca outside.

We still had digital copy.

Official evidence case long closed.

I showed.

“Hard to see.”

“Exactly.”

A gray-haired shape behind glass.

Phone.

Then Lily:

“Mom recognized?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“She had video-called Rebecca once.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“I hadn’t seen Rebecca for years and reflection was bad.”

Then:

“Did you really think she was dead?”

“Yes.”

“Did you feel stupid?”

“Yes.”

She laughed.

Then serious:

“Why believe Grandma without proof?”

“Because families teach which facts require checking.”

She waited.

I explained:

If stranger told me aunt died, I would verify.

Mother said, I accepted.

Trust can shortcut skepticism.

Usually good.

Sometimes dangerous.

Then Lily:

“So should I doubt family?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“Important claims deserve evidence when something doesn't fit.”

Good.

Then Emma joined.

“Your dad also hates conflict.”

“Thanks.”

Lily:

“Is that genetic?”

We laughed.

Then she asked:

“What did Rebecca want filming?”

“To create record.”

“Did she help Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Could she have done more?”

“Yes.”

No saints.

Then we deleted our personal copy? Lily wanted keep? We had already preserved official. She chose one still image maybe. But no trauma museum. Let's say after viewing, we deleted duplicate folder.

Rebecca’s crescent brooch remained.

Lily wore occasionally.

Not because evidence.

Because she liked.

That was better.

Then family history:

Thomas ledger.

Margaret conviction.

Caleb.

Rebecca.

Lily wrote private timeline for Noah when older.

No sensational.

Then:

“Should we tell him Grandma Margaret was monster?”

Emma:

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because she wasn’t.”

“She did monstrous thing.”

“Yes.”

Difference.

Then Noah later learned.

May you like

History without inherited hatred.

That was our goal.
