I knew the signature immediately.
Because it was mine.
Not handwriting.
Digital.
The same PDF signature I used for routine annual consent forms.

I had resigned board committee two years earlier but remained statutory director? Let's make I still held one board seat though rarely attended.
The minutes stated I attended a special remote meeting approving $460,000 renovation advance.

I had been in Phoenix for project inspection.
Could have attended remotely.
I had not.
My email calendar proved no meeting invitation.
Then metadata.
Document created March 21.
Three days after purported meeting.
On Caleb’s company laptop.
My signature image copied from prior unanimous consent.
“That’s forgery,” I said.
Corporate counsel corrected:
“Potential unauthorized use of signature. Let investigators characterize.”
Good.
No melodrama.
Then Caleb’s attorney said administrative assistant mistakenly reused signature block and Daniel had verbally approved later.
I had not.
Margaret said I had.
Rebecca found email from me on March 23:
What was $460k cash drop? Caleb says warehouse emergency. Please send details when convenient.
I asked.
Not approved.
Caleb replied:
Already handled. Mom signed. Nothing for you.
That helped.
Then audit widened.
No wholesale fraud.
Most company books legitimate.
Carter Coastal Foods was profitable.
Hundreds employees.
Real customers.
Real fish.
The problem concentrated in related-party real-estate arrangements.
Preliminary:
$460,000 unauthorized advance.
$285,000 above-market lease payments over three years.
$170,000 management fees lacking clear service documentation.
Trust guarantee exposure.
Potential improper benefit around $915,000 before recoveries/offsets.
Not millions vanished.
Then properties had value.
If Carter Harbor Properties repaid advance and lease adjusted, much recoverable.
Margaret and Caleb had not built imaginary empire.
They had used family control to favor their own entity.
Then Emma asked:
“Was dinner because of this?”
Partly.
Rebecca believed Margaret feared original ledger could show Thomas objected to related-party deals, weakening their claim he had approved.
But why mentally unstable narrative?
Because if Emma said Margaret assaulted her while searching ledger, they wanted discredit.
If Emma shared Rebecca messages, they wanted family to believe Rebecca manipulating unstable pregnant woman.
Six witnesses became social defense.
Then Detective Chen uncovered text from Caleb to Margaret day before dinner:
Get everyone there. She won’t pull the victim act if there are witnesses.
Margaret:
Susan may be soft.
Caleb:
Then five. Enough.
Then:
Need her phone before she starts recording.
Premeditation to take phone.
Not necessarily plan physical assault.
Then Margaret:
I want blue book back before Daniel sees Rebecca’s lies.
There.
Then Caleb:
If she won’t hand it over, make her understand this family closes ranks.
No fish bones plan.
Abuse escalated.
Then criminal charges filed.
Margaret:
Assault on pregnant adult.
Coercion.
Trespass/unauthorized entry? Since using key without permission maybe criminal trespass, depending law.
Attempted evidence interference for taking ledger after hospital? Could be theft/tampering if known relevant to investigation. Police had not yet requested ledger at 2:17? They had opened complaint and scene; Margaret knew. Prosecutor charged obstruction/tampering related to removing potential evidence after incident.
Caleb:
Unlawful restraint.
Assault.
Coercion.
Interference with communications for taking Emma’s phone.
Obstruction/conspiracy related to witness setup? Maybe.
No attempted murder.
No poisoning.
No bizarre kidnapping.
Then Margaret and Caleb released on conditions after arraignment:
No contact Emma/Daniel.
No entry their home.
No company financial actions beyond counsel-approved ordinary operations? Corporate board independently suspended Caleb from CFO/operations pending audit. Margaret removed as chair by shareholder vote? With her 30+Caleb 27 maybe control, but conflict. Daniel + employee 8 + trust 10 =43, not majority. Some independent directors maybe. Let's define 5-person board: Margaret, Caleb, Daniel, independent Nora Jenkins, employee trustee rep Paul. Harbor State can vote its shares and special rights. Court/probate order suspends them from trust roles, but company board could be deadlocked. Lenders also require independent controller due audit. They voluntarily take leave under counsel. Fine.
Then I went home.
Locks changed.
Emergency key useless.
Emma stood in nursery.
“You believe me?”
The question hurt more than corporate forgery.
“Yes.”
“Now.”
I closed eyes.
“I should have asked sooner.”
She cried.
I did too.
Then she said:
“Daniel, I need you to understand something.”
“What?”
“Your mother did not become dangerous six weeks ago.”
I knew.

And I had kept calling them family tension.
