Chapter 7 - The Search

Police searched Kevin and Tiffany’s home on a Wednesday morning.

No television style doors kicked down.

They executed a warrant.

Computers.

Phones.

Closing folders.

Business records.

External drives.

Kevin and Tiffany were present with counsel contacted.

Kayla was not.

She stayed with her friend, then came to us.

She cried anyway.

“They took Dad’s computer.”

“Yes.”

“Is he coming here?”

“No.”

“Are you mad at me?”

Gloria looked almost offended.

“Never for telling truth.”

Kayla sat at our table.

The same table Tiffany had placed her thirty eight dish list on.

“How is Grandpa?”

“I’m fine.”

She looked at my heating brace.

“You’re not.”

Fair.

My back had worsened because I was still driving nights to supplement retirement income while Gloria’s restaurant stabilized after pandemic debt.

Kayla frowned.

“Why are you still driving?”

“Because bills exist.”

“But Dad always says you’re loaded.”

I laughed.

“We’re comfortable. Not loaded.”

“He says Grandma has millions.”

“On paper, property has value.”

“Same?”

“No.”

That was another family misunderstanding.

Gloria’s restaurant parcel had appreciated.

Valued around $3.2 million.

Our house about $540,000.

Retirement accounts around $900,000 combined.

Restaurant business value perhaps another $700,000 depending earnings.

We were well off compared with many.

But five million liquid?

No.

Property wealth is not checking account.

Kevin saw assets and imagined availability.

Kayla looked stunned.

“So Grandma’s not secretly rich?”

Gloria smiled.

“I wish.”

“What about the restaurant?”

“It pays us and twelve employees. That’s different from selling it.”

Kayla whispered:

“Dad says it’s his eventually.”

There.

Again.

I asked:

“Did Gloria ever promise?”

“She says someday maybe Kevin and Kayla can decide whether to keep it.”

Not same as his.

Gloria said:

“My will does not leave it all to Kevin.”

Kayla looked.

“What does it do?”

“We don’t need to discuss inheritance while I’m alive.”

Good.

Then:

“Your father built his plans around things he had not been given.”

That was the core.

Two days after search, Detective Ellis told us investigators recovered the original transparent signature image and a draft of the Gloria investor letter from Tiffany’s device.

Also:

A text exchange.

Kevin:

Mom will never sign the guaranty.

Tiffany:

She doesn’t need to if the bank accepts e signature.

Kevin:

That’s insane.

Tiffany:

You want Rosewood or not?

I stared.

Kevin knew.

Not just later.

Before.

Next:

Kevin:

What if she finds out?

Tiffany:

By then refinance.

Kevin:

No.

Then three hours later:

Kevin:

How long until refinance?

That answer changed his defense.

He had objected.

Then joined.

Another:

Tiffany:

We only need her paper for 12 months.

Kevin:

Mom would say no.

Tiffany:

Exactly why we don’t ask.

There.

Intent.

No ambiguity.

Kevin was not passive husband this time.

He knew.

Gloria left the room.

I found her in backyard.

The tables were gone.

Grass recovered.

She stood where buffet had been.

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“I kept hoping Tiffany did it and he was stupid.”

“I know.”

“He knew.”

I put arm around her.

“He did.”

She cried silently.

Not for money.

For the boy she remembered.

Then another message recovered.

Kevin:

After Kayla party we announce Mom as partner. Once 75 people hear her name with Rosewood she can’t deny without looking crazy.

Tiffany:

Exactly.

The humiliation had a second function.

Keep Gloria away from Rosewood while publicly using her endorsement.

If Gloria later denied investing, they could say:

She is embarrassed because Tiffany rejected her backyard party.

She’s retaliating.

The cruel party was also narrative preparation.

That was the twist we had not seen.

Tiffany had made sure seventy five witnesses watched Gloria get upset before Kevin publicly thanked her as an investor.

They were creating a future explanation for why Gloria might “change her mind.”

May you like

She was not just humiliated.

She was being discredited in advance.
