Chapter 15 - The Bank’s Mistake

The bank was not innocent.

Not criminally complicit.

But negligent enough to contribute.

Internal review found:

The loan officer relied too heavily on Kevin’s long standing family relationship story.

Remote notarization exception was accepted despite broken video.

A credit analyst questioned why Gloria had no direct interview.

The concern was overridden because her purported guarantee documents were complete and Kevin said she disliked financial meetings.

The bank had also failed to independently call Gloria at the phone number already on file.

Instead, they used a number supplied in loan package.

That number belonged to a prepaid line controlled by Tiffany.

Basic failure.

The bank negotiated settlement.

They released all claims against Gloria.

Covered most of our legal/document examination costs.

Paid a confidential additional amount for title impairment and disruption? We shouldn't specify maybe. Gloria insisted no gag beyond terms. Could say financial settlement modest and not windfall.

Title insurer contributed.

Remote notary provider changed procedures.

Madison Vale lost platform privileges and received state disciplinary action for failing required continuous personal appearance/verification, but investigators found no evidence she knowingly joined fraud.

That mattered.

Gloria asked:

“So she isn’t going to prison?”

“No.”

“She notarized me when I wasn’t there.”

“She violated rules. That doesn’t automatically mean she knew Kevin and Tiffany were committing bank fraud.”

Gloria sighed.

“I hate nuance.”

“So do I.”

We both laughed.

The bank offered us relationship manager.

Gloria said:

“I’m moving accounts.”

Fair.

We moved Gloria’s Corner banking to another institution.

Not because first bank evil.

Trust broken.

Consequences.

The community feast from birthday remained local memory.

People occasionally asked Gloria to recreate “the thirty eight dish night.”

She refused.

“I am never cooking thirty eight things again unless somebody pays catering deposit.”

Healthy.

She did create a yearly neighborhood potluck.

Everyone brought something.

No hero worship.

No viral brand.

Just shared food.

The first year Mrs. Delaney brought store bought cookies.

Gloria said:

“Perfect.”

Tiffany had called homemade inferior.

Gloria now cared even less about presentation.
