Chapter 24 - What We Almost Lost

At seventy one, Gloria sold the commercial property.

Not because forced.

Because timing right.

Maria’s restaurant business had grown.

A local real estate company bought building with long term lease preserving Gloria’s Corner.

Sale price reflected years of appreciation.

Gloria cried at closing.

So did I.

Kevin did not ask for money.

Kayla did not ask.

We invested conservatively.

Paid off our house.

Set aside health care.

Travel.

Charity.

Some education support for future great grandchildren if any, professionally managed.

Our estate plan stayed clear.

No one could pledge assets without documented authority.

Independent co trustee for major transactions after first death.

Not because we expected family fraud again.

Because good controls are good even when everyone behaves.

Naomi joked:

“You finally learned to use lawyers before disasters.”

“Expensive lesson.”

“Billable lesson.”

I still disliked lawyers.

At dinner that night, Gloria said:

“You know what scared me most?”

“Losing restaurant?”

“No.”

“What?”

“Finding out Kevin could look at everything I built and see collateral.”

I understood.

“He sees differently now.”

“Yes.”

“Enough?”

She thought.

“Enough for relationship.”

Not enough to undo.

That was closure.
