Chapter 17 - Gloria’s Letter

Two years after the birthday, Gloria wrote Kevin.
Not because therapist demanded.
She did not have therapist? She eventually did see one. Could mention.
She sat at kitchen table for three nights.
Finally:
Kevin,
I have forgiven many things faster than I should have because I was afraid distance meant I failed as your mother.
This time I am not going to use forgiveness to avoid grief.
She told him she loved him.
Told him the restaurant was safe.
Told him Maria managed more hours now.
Told him Kayla was doing well but refused to report private details beyond what Kayla permitted.
Then:
I can understand that you thought you could replace the risk before I discovered it. I cannot accept that as permission.
And:
The part I struggle with most is not the money. It is the message where you planned to say I was getting forgetful if I denied signing. You knew how frightened I was when my mother developed dementia. You were willing to use that fear to protect yourself.
She cried writing.
Then:
I do not know what our relationship will look like when you come home. I know it cannot look like before.
She mailed.
Kevin responded:
I don’t have a defense.
Then:
I remember typing it. Tiffany said people would believe it because of Grandma. I said yes. I wish I could tell you I didn’t mean it, but I meant it in that moment.
Honesty.
Ugly.
Useful.
Gloria finally cried the way she had not in court.
“He admitted.”
“Yes.”
“I wanted him to say Tiffany made him.”
“I know.”
“But he didn’t.”
“No.”
“Good.”

That was the paradox.
Truth hurt more and healed better.
