Chapter 20 - The Restaurant Decision
At sixty seven, Gloria decided she did not want to run Gloria’s Corner forever.
She had already reduced hours.
Maria effectively managed daily operations.
The old version of Gloria would have assumed Kevin should take over because he was her son.
The new version asked:
“Who actually wants this work?”
Maria.
She had worked there fourteen years.
Started as server.
Learned prep.
Payroll.
Suppliers.
Staff scheduling.
She knew every customer.
She could not afford the building.
So we structured a sale of business operations to Maria over time, with professional financing and a seller note secured properly.
The building remained in Gloria’s trust.
Maria’s company leased at market but fair rate.
Kevin was told before closing.
He went quiet.
Then:
“Good.”
Gloria studied him.
“You mean that?”
“Yes.”
“I thought I wanted restaurant. I wanted what it represented.”
“What?”
“That you believed in me.”
Gloria’s face softened.
“I believed in you before Rosewood.”
“I didn’t.”
There.
Kevin had interpreted money as belief.
Maybe because we often expressed support financially.
Another lesson.
“Do you want to work here?”
“No.”
“Good.”
They laughed.
No inherited job.
No entitlement.
The restaurant continued.
Maria changed menu slightly.
Gloria complained about one sandwich.
