Chapter 6
Julian searched the walls for another exit.
“There should be a ventilation shaft.”
Helen opened a metal panel beside the shelves.
The fan behind it was silent.
“Vanessa shut it down.”
Michael’s breathing grew shallow. Blood from his wound had soaked through his shirt.
Claire covered Emma’s mouth with a piece of fabric torn from her uniform.
“How long do we have?”
“Minutes,” Julian said.
Helen removed a folder from the shelf.
“Victor built an emergency system. If we release the archive, the mansion enters full security lockdown.”
“We are already locked inside,” Claire replied.
“Not like this. Steel shutters will seal every room. The gas will stop, but so will all ventilation.”
Michael understood first.
“The guests upstairs could suffocate.”
Helen nodded.
Claire stared at Emma.
Her daughter’s eyes were watering.
“Release it.”
Julian looked at her.
“Claire.”
“My child is breathing poison.”
“The system may trap everyone.”
“Vanessa put explosives on them. They are already trapped.”
Helen took the gray elephant and found a tiny sensor beneath the fabric.
“Emma must place her hand here.”
Claire hesitated.
Once the archive was released, every secret inside the room would begin moving beyond the mansion. Judges, senators, police commissioners, and business leaders would be exposed.
Some were guilty.
Others might only have appeared in the records because they had been threatened or investigated.
Truth did not always separate the innocent before destroying them.
Emma coughed again.
Claire guided her daughter’s hand onto the sensor.
The toy played Michael’s lullaby.
A mechanical voice spoke from the shelves.
“Biological identity confirmed.”
Lights illuminated throughout the chamber.
“Awaiting final authorization.”
Helen looked at Claire.
“The command must come from Victor’s successor.”
Everyone turned toward Julian.
He did not speak.
Claire saw something unfamiliar on his face.
Fear.
“If I authorize it,” Julian said, “the evidence will not only destroy the Whitmores. It will reveal every crime committed by my family.”
“Then decide what matters more,” Claire said. “Your name or the people Vanessa is willing to kill.”
Julian looked at Emma.
The child was clinging to the same toy that could end his empire.
He placed his hand beside hers.
“Julian Anthony Mercer. Release everything.”
Alarms exploded through the mansion.
Air rushed through the chamber as the gas system shut down.
Upstairs, steel shutters dropped over every window. Security doors sealed individual sections of the estate.
The records room came alive.
Scanners began copying documents. Hidden transmitters sent encrypted files toward dozens of outside destinations.
Michael smiled weakly.
“You finally did one honest thing.”
Julian grabbed his shirt.
“You placed a child in the center of this.”
“I placed evidence where Vanessa would never look.”
“She looked.”
“Because someone told her.”
Michael’s eyes moved toward Helen.
Claire noticed.
“So that is the real question,” he said. “Who led Vanessa to Emma?”
Helen’s face went pale.
Before she could answer, a speaker activated.
Vanessa’s voice filled the chamber.
“Thank you, Julian.”
The scanners stopped.
Every monitor displayed the same message.
Transmission redirected.
Helen rushed to the controls.
“No.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You did not release the archive to the public. You delivered it directly to my father.”
Julian struck the console.
Michael sank against the wall.
“She changed the destination codes.”
Helen looked at him.
“Only someone with Victor’s original encryption could do that.”
Claire understood.
The system had not been betrayed by Thomas Vale.
It had been betrayed years earlier by someone who helped build it.
Her mother.
Julian turned his gun toward Helen.
“What did you do?”
Helen stared at Claire with tears in her eyes.
“I was trying to keep her alive.”
A section of the wall opened behind her.
Vanessa stepped through holding a remote control.
“I told you she made people cry,” Emma whispered.
Vanessa smiled at the child.
