Chapter 10

Robert Dawson entered the grand dining hall surrounded by federal agents.

Claire had not seen her father for nearly two years.

After Michael’s supposed death, Robert had become distant and bitter. He blamed Claire for refusing to move away from Chicago. Their final argument ended when he told her that Emma would be safer without the Mercer family’s money.

At the time, Claire did not understand what he meant.

Now he wore a federal identification badge over a dark coat and carried a weapon.

The dining hall looked like a battlefield.

Tables were overturned. Blood stained the marble. Guests remained pressed against walls while agents removed the inactive bracelets from their wrists.

Robert saw Helen first.

His face lost all color.

“You’re alive.”

Helen held Emma close.

“You knew that.”

“No.”

“You signed the documents that declared me dead.”

Robert lowered his weapon slightly.

“I signed what the Whitmores put in front of me because they threatened Claire.”

Helen laughed through tears.

“Another man who lied to protect her.”

Claire entered the dining hall with Julian beside her. Michael followed slowly, supported by one of Julian’s surviving guards.

Robert aimed directly at Julian.

“Step away from my daughter.”

Julian did not move.

Claire raised her pistol.

Every agent in the room pointed a weapon at her.

Robert stared at her in disbelief.

“Claire, put it down.”

“Tell them to lower theirs.”

“Julian Mercer is responsible for Michael’s disappearance, your mother’s imprisonment, and tonight’s attack.”

“Vanessa admitted she planned the siege.”

Vanessa was brought into the room by two agents.

Despite her wounded shoulder, she looked strangely calm.

Robert glanced at her.

“She is cooperating.”

Claire almost smiled.

“She put explosives on a hundred people.”

“The devices contained no explosives,” Robert said. “They were tracking units designed to create panic.”

Senator Whitmore stepped forward from among the guests.

His wrists were free.

Claire understood.

The federal agents were not rescuing them.

They were controlling the scene.

Julian looked toward the exits.

More agents entered.

Robert held out his hand to Claire.

“Give me the elephant.”

Emma buried the toy against her chest.

Claire looked at her father.

“You knew about the archive.”

“I knew Victor Mercer collected evidence illegally.”

“You ordered Julian to hire me.”

Robert said nothing.

That was enough.

Helen stepped forward.

“Robert, what did you promise them?”

His face hardened.

“I promised to end this. The Mercers, the Whitmores, the judges, the officials. All of it.”

“By using Claire and Emma?”

“I placed them where every side would protect them until the archive could be activated.”

Claire felt as if the floor had shifted beneath her.

Her father had not been a frightened parent forced into silence.

He had been moving them like pieces on a board.

Vanessa smiled at Claire.

“Now you know why I slapped you. Your father needed Emma beside Julian when the files were released. The confrontation ensured every witness saw him claim her publicly.”

Julian’s expression changed.

“They intend to accuse me of using the child to unlock the archive.”

Robert spoke to the agents.

“Arrest Julian Mercer.”

Claire moved in front of him.

Robert stared at her.

“He is a criminal.”

“So are the people standing beside you.”

“I am trying to save you.”

“No. You are trying to control which version of the truth survives.”

Michael collapsed against a chair.

Emma pulled away from Helen and ran toward him.

“Daddy?”

It was the first time she had called him that.

Michael’s face crumpled.

He reached for her, but before he could touch her, the gray elephant began playing the lullaby again.

Everyone fell silent.

A new voice came from inside the toy.

Victor Mercer.

Julian’s dead father.

“If this message is playing, the archive has been activated and every alliance has failed.”

Julian stared at the elephant.

Robert lifted his weapon.

The recording continued.

“Claire Dawson is not a witness. She is the legal owner of every account, property, and company listed in the Mercer archive.”

Claire could not breathe.

Julian looked at her with genuine shock.

Senator Whitmore moved toward the nearest exit.

Agents blocked him.

Victor’s voice continued.

“Helen Dawson was never merely my investigator. She was my wife.”

Julian turned toward Helen.

Claire looked from her mother to Julian.

Helen’s eyes filled with tears.

“Claire,” she whispered. “I was going to tell you.”

Victor’s final words came through the elephant.

“Julian, protect your sister. Robert Dawson will kill her before he allows her to inherit what belongs to both of you.”

Robert aimed at Claire.

Julian stepped in front of her.

Michael dragged Emma beneath the table.

Helen screamed.

A single shot thundered through the grand dining hall.

The gray elephant fell onto the marble floor.

Blood spread beside it.

No one could see whose body had fallen.

Then every light in the mansion went out.

In the darkness, Vanessa began laughing.

Continue to the next part: When the lights return, one member of the Mercer family will be missing and the person holding Emma’s elephant will control an empire.
