Chapter 3

Julian activated a small flashlight and led them deeper beneath the mansion.

The passage had been built during Prohibition, when his grandfather used the estate to move liquor and weapons beneath Lake Forest without attracting police attention.

Claire carried Emma. Michael limped behind them with one hand pressed against his wound.

“What does Emma unlock?” Claire demanded.

Michael hesitated.

“The files were protected by a biological security system.”

“She was a baby when you disappeared.”

“That was the point. No one could force her to explain what she knew.”

Claire stopped.

“You used our infant daughter as a password?”

“I used a scan taken from the hospital records. Her palm pattern and fingerprints were required to open the archive.”

“You stole her medical information?”

“I was desperate.”

“You endangered her before she could even speak.”

Michael lowered his head.

“I thought I could destroy the Whitmores and come home.”

Claire stared at the man she had loved since college.

For years, she had remembered him as gentle, cautious, and honest. Now every memory seemed to contain a locked door she had never noticed.

Julian moved closer to Emma.

“No one is using the child.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“You don’t get to pretend you care about innocence.”

Julian’s expression remained cold.

“I care about hers.”

“Why?”

The question echoed through the tunnel.

Claire looked at Julian.

He had employed her for eighteen months. During that time, he had never spoken harshly to Emma. He allowed her to leave drawings on his office door. He once canceled a meeting because she had fallen asleep in the library and he did not want his guests to wake her.

Claire had assumed his unexpected kindness came from pity.

Now she was not certain.

Julian looked at Michael.

“Because your family was placed under my protection.”

“By whom?”

Julian said nothing.

Michael’s face tightened.

“You always hide the price until people owe you too much to refuse.”

A metal door blocked the tunnel ahead.

Julian entered a code. It opened into a narrow security room filled with monitors.

Most of the screens were black.

One still displayed the grand dining hall.

Vanessa stood on the central table while armed men moved between the trapped guests. Silver devices had been fastened around every guest’s wrist.

Senator Walter Whitmore stood beside his daughter.

He had entered the gala pretending to be another honored guest. Now he held a gun against the head of a federal judge.

Vanessa looked into the security camera.

“I know you can see me, Julian.”

She lifted her wrist.

Her bracelet was different from the others.

It contained a small switch.

“Eight minutes.”

Emma touched the screen.

“Why is the bad lady smiling?”

Claire held her closer.

“Because she thinks she has won.”

On another monitor, Michael noticed two of Julian’s guards opening a rear gate for armed men.

“There,” he said. “Your traitor.”

Julian recognized the guard immediately.

Thomas Vale had served him for eleven years.

Claire saw the flash of pain in Julian’s eyes before it disappeared.

Vanessa had not merely entered his home.

She had been invited through every layer of its defenses.

Michael opened a cabinet and searched for medical supplies. As he bent forward, a photograph slipped from his coat.

Claire picked it up.

It showed Michael standing beside Vanessa outside a hotel.

The date was six months after his supposed death.

Vanessa’s hand was resting against his chest.

On the back, someone had written three words.

We finish together.

Claire turned the photograph toward him.

“Were you hiding from Vanessa or hiding with her?”

Michael froze.

Julian drew his weapon.

Emma began to cry.

Michael looked from Claire to the gun.

“I can explain.”

“You have five seconds,” Julian said.

Michael’s face hardened.

“The evidence inside that elephant does not only destroy the Whitmores.”

His gaze locked onto Julian.

“It proves Julian murdered his own father.”

Continue to the next part: Michael’s accusation forces Claire to question whether Julian protected her or imprisoned her.
