Chapter 5

The hidden passage opened behind the altar of a stone chapel beneath the mansion.

Dust covered the pews, yet candles burned beside a black marble tomb.

Claire recognized the name carved into it.

Victor Mercer.

Julian’s father.

Helen Dawson’s voice came from the shadows.

“He was not the monster people believed he was.”

Claire turned sharply.

Her mother stood behind the last pew.

The ropes from the video were gone.

Vanessa was nowhere in sight.

Claire raised the pistol with trembling hands.

“Are you real?”

Helen’s eyes filled with tears.

“I am.”

Claire wanted to run toward her.

She wanted to strike her.

Instead, she held Emma tighter.

“You left me.”

“I was taken.”

“For fourteen years?”

“I escaped twice. Both times, they threatened you.”

Michael entered the chapel behind Claire.

Helen’s expression changed the moment she saw him.

“You.”

Michael stopped.

“You know me?”

“You delivered messages for Senator Whitmore.”

Claire looked between them.

Michael shook his head.

“I was twenty three. I didn’t know what the organization was.”

“You knew enough to accept their money.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

She and Michael had met when they were twenty four.

His entire life with her had begun only months after his work for the Whitmores.

“Did you marry me because of my mother?” Claire asked.

“No.”

“Did you approach me because of her?”

Michael could not answer.

That silence destroyed something inside Claire.

Emma hid her face against Claire’s shoulder.

Julian entered last and closed the passage.

Helen looked at him for a long moment.

“You have Victor’s eyes.”

“You knew my father.”

“I was his financial investigator.”

Michael laughed in disbelief.

“She was more than that. Helen Dawson helped Victor build the hidden accounts.”

Helen’s face tightened.

“I helped him document the officials who used the Mercer organization. Victor wanted leverage strong enough to end the family’s criminal operations without getting everyone killed.”

Julian stared at his father’s tomb.

“He never told me.”

“He did not trust what power might turn you into.”

The words struck Julian, but he did not react.

Helen approached Emma slowly.

“This is my granddaughter?”

Claire stepped back.

“You do not get to claim her yet.”

Helen stopped.

“I understand.”

“No, you don’t. I cried for you until I learned how to stop. Dad spent years telling me you were selfish. Michael built our marriage on secrets. Julian watched me mourn a living husband. Every person in this room decided I could survive a lie more easily than the truth.”

No one answered.

A faint click came from beneath the altar.

Julian pushed Claire and Emma down as bullets tore through the chapel doors.

Thomas Vale entered with armed men.

“Vanessa wants the child alive,” he shouted. “The rest are optional.”

Julian fired from behind a stone column.

Michael dragged Helen behind the pews.

Claire crawled toward the tomb with Emma beneath her body.

The chapel erupted with gunfire.

Candles shattered. Wood splintered. Stone fragments filled the air.

Julian shot two attackers before Thomas struck his shoulder.

Michael seized a fallen weapon and fired at Thomas, forcing him back through the doorway.

Helen pressed her palm against Victor Mercer’s name.

A section of the tomb opened.

“Inside!”

They crawled into a narrow chamber as Julian covered them.

He entered last and sealed the stone panel.

The space beyond was not a burial vault.

It was a records room.

Shelves held ledgers, photographs, recordings, and sealed envelopes bearing the names of powerful people upstairs.

Claire stared at decades of evidence.

Helen pointed toward Emma’s elephant.

“The toy does not contain the archive.”

“Then what does it contain?” Claire asked.

“The command that can release every file in this room.”

A red light appeared above the sealed entrance.

Julian looked up.

“They are pumping gas into the chapel.”

May you like

Emma began coughing.

Continue to the next part: With poison spreading through the chamber, Claire must decide whether to expose every guest and risk killing them all.
