Chapter 2

Emergency lights glowed along the floor as screams erupted around the dining hall.

Guests crawled beneath tables. Crystal glasses struck the marble and shattered. Julian pulled Claire and Emma behind a stone column while his guards fired toward the balcony.

Michael dropped beside them.

Claire shoved him away.

“You’re dead.”

“I know what you were told.”

“I buried you.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

Claire struck his chest with both hands.

“You let our daughter grow up without a father.”

Michael absorbed every blow without defending himself.

“I didn’t have a choice.”

“There is always a choice.”

Another bullet struck the column above Claire’s head.

Julian covered Emma with his body as fragments of stone rained down.

“Fight later,” he said. “Move now.”

He led them through the service corridor while several guards returned fire. Behind them, the dining hall had become a maze of overturned tables, frightened elites, and shadows moving between chandeliers.

Emma pressed her face against Claire’s shoulder.

“My elephant is scared.”

Claire kissed her hair.

“I know, baby.”

Michael looked at the stuffed toy.

“Where did she get that?”

Claire stared at him.

“You gave it to her the morning you disappeared.”

Michael’s expression changed.

“I gave her a yellow rabbit.”

Claire stopped walking.

“No. You gave her this elephant.”

“I have never seen that toy before.”

Julian turned toward them.

Vanessa’s men crashed through a side door at the end of the corridor. Julian fired twice. Both men fell before they could lift their weapons.

Claire covered Emma’s eyes.

Julian pushed open the pantry door and moved a steel shelving unit aside. A narrow passage appeared behind it.

“Inside.”

They entered the passage moments before gunfire tore through the pantry.

Julian sealed the hidden door.

Michael leaned against the wall, holding the bloody wound beneath his ribs.

Claire looked at him with equal parts anger and terror.

“Tell me why my daughter is carrying something you never gave her.”

Michael struggled to breathe.

“I worked in financial compliance at Whitmore Shipping. Officially, I examined overseas transactions. In reality, I moved money for Vanessa’s father.”

“Senator Whitmore?”

“He used his company to clean money for judges, officials, and organized crime families. I copied the accounts when I realized Vanessa was arranging murders to protect them.”

Julian’s eyes hardened.

“You were supposed to bring the files to me.”

“I tried. Someone warned the Whitmores.”

Michael looked directly at Julian.

“Someone inside your organization.”

Claire remembered the day Michael vanished. He had left before dawn after receiving a phone call. By sunset, police had found his car abandoned beside Lake Michigan.

Three days later, an unrecognizable body wearing his watch had been recovered from a burned warehouse.

“Why did they tell me you were dead?” Claire asked.

“Because the Whitmores believed I had hidden evidence with you. Julian arranged the false identification and moved me between safe houses.”

Claire turned toward Julian.

“You knew.”

“I knew Michael was alive.”

“For almost three years?”

“Yes.”

Her voice broke.

“You watched me scrub your floors while I mourned a man you knew was breathing.”

“I watched you because Vanessa’s people were still searching for you.”

“You could have told me.”

“And made you a target the moment you looked at your daughter differently?”

“You made that decision for me.”

Julian accepted the accusation without looking away.

Michael reached toward Emma’s toy.

“The evidence must be inside the elephant.”

Claire pulled it away from him.

“Who put it there?”

A small electronic sound came from the stuffed animal.

Emma looked down.

The elephant’s stitched belly began vibrating.

Julian took the toy carefully and found a hidden seam beneath one leg. Inside was a slim metal device with a blinking red light.

A woman’s voice came through it.

Vanessa.

“Julian, the people in your dining hall are wearing explosive bracelets. If anyone leaves the mansion before I receive the evidence, they all die.”

Michael closed his eyes.

“She planned this for months.”

Vanessa’s voice continued.

“You have ten minutes to bring Claire Dawson and her daughter to the old wine cellar.”

Claire’s blood ran cold.

“She wants Emma?”

“No,” Michael whispered. “She wants whatever Emma can unlock.”

The transmission ended.

A second later, a deafening explosion shook the hidden passage.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

The lights went out again.

In the darkness, Michael gripped Claire’s wrist.

“Vanessa chose that child for a reason.”

Continue to the next part: Claire learns why Emma’s hand may be the only key capable of opening the stolen files.
