Chapter 8 - Mason Cole

Mason was charged first with:
Aggravated malicious wounding? Given non-life-threatening injuries, maybe malicious wounding, burglary? He was invited, so burglary via remaining unlawfully with intent? Legal classification varies. Let's keep general: felony assault, abduction/unlawful restraint, attempted robbery/theft of evidence, unauthorized computer access, and conspiracy with Gavin. Maybe "burglary" not because invited initially but could become unlawful entry after deception. Let's say prosecutors charged burglary by fraud/remaining with intent, but avoid technical certainty.
Also witness intimidation? Ethan is witness in federal case; Violet targeted to obtain evidence. Could be.
Gavin faced unauthorized access, conspiracy, obstruction, failure to render aid? Plus burglary participation.
Aaron obstruction.
Sentinel data crimes under federal review.
Then Mason’s attorney, Thomas Weller, requested bail.
Prosecutor opposed.
Flight.
Attack of minor.
Evidence tampering.
Judge denied pretrial release.
Good.
Then Mason asked to send apology to Violet.
She said no.
He asked again through counsel one month later.
No.
Then defense narrative appeared.
Ethan Harper had long vendetta against Mason over failed business investigation.
Violet’s injuries occurred during “mutual struggle” after misunderstanding.
I laughed.
Sixteen year old mutual struggle with forty three year old trained man.
No.
Then surveillance.
Partial hub footage recovered.
No audio.
At 3:18, Mason enters with Violet.
She smiles.
He carries gift bag.
At 3:22, Gavin enters after code service.
At 3:27, Mason walks toward study.
At 3:31, Violet stands in doorway gesturing.
At 3:33, camera offline.
Local cache resumed 3:43 due failsafe.
Frame:
Violet on floor.
Mason kneeling beside backpack.
Black Ranger ring.
Gavin near front door.
At 3:45 they leave.
No graphic assault captured.
But aftermath.
Then gift bag found.
Inside:
A birthday card.
$50 gift card.
And a small silver compass.
Mason had actually brought gift.
That unsettled Violet.
“He planned present?”
“Maybe to make entry believable.”
“Or he wanted give?”
“Both possible.”
She hated.
People want villains pure so gifts become fake.
Maybe it was bait and affection.
Both.
Then the ring.
Mason’s black Ranger ring missing when arrested.
He had left at motel addressed to me.
That ring matched video style, but not unique enough alone.
His own note.
His admission phone.
Gavin testimony.
Violet identification.
Strong.
Then Mason’s phone.
He had photographed Kestrel note.
Search? Avoid showing harmful search. He had messages to Gavin:
Ethan gone.
Girl home.
She trusts me.
Five minutes.
That is powerful and safe.
Then:
If she gets difficult, keep her away from phone.
Premeditation to control, not assault.
Then Gavin:
No touching kid.
Mason:
Relax.
This helped Gavin but showed concern.
Then after:
Gavin:
You hit a kid.
Mason:
She grabbed me.
Gavin:
We’re done.
Then Mason:
Aaron will fix initial.
There.
Aaron knew what? Mason expectation based on relationship. Aaron later obliged.
Then federal Sentinel case.
Mason messages:
Data is ours while customer pays us to manage it.
Gavin:
Not to sell.
Mason:
I didn’t say sell.
Ambiguous.
But financial deposits and Gavin testimony.
Gavin pleaded guilty to computer fraud and conspiracy to provide protected security data to burglary crew, plus role in Harper house intrusion and failure to aid? He agreed testify.
He said Mason took percentage.
Prosecutor required corroboration.
Bank cash deposits near dates.
Still circumstantial.
Could convict conspiracy.
Then I asked Agent Morgan:
“Was Mason always doing this?”
“No evidence before Sentinel.”
“Army?”
“No.”
Important.
No retroactive monster.
His military service honorable.
No hidden atrocities.
He became corrupt later.
Then:
“What about ring?”
“Just ring.”
Good.
Symbols don't commit crimes.
Then she said:
“Your old call sign was in Mason’s contact notes.”
Of course.
No bigger conspiracy.
Then Violet attended school remotely for three weeks.
Returned part days.
Students stared.
Rumors:
Home invasion.
Gang.
Federal revenge.
One student asked if her dad killed attackers.
She said:
“No. Police arrested him.”
Then:
“My dad stayed with me.”
I heard later from counselor.
That meant more than Ranger myth.
Then at home she taped a sign by door:
CHECK WHO IT IS.
No text on screen pertains video only, story can have signs.
She then removed because it made her anxious.
We installed new alarm from unrelated company.
No remote master code retained by installer beyond service sessions.
I reviewed.
Violet rolled eyes:
“Dad, don't turn house into Pentagon.”
“I’m reading contract.”
“Same.”
We laughed.
Then one evening doorbell rang.
Food delivery.
Both froze.
I looked at Violet.
She breathed.
Then opened app camera.
Correct.
Not fearlessness.
Skill.
Then she said:
“Can I have friends over?”
“Yes.”
“Without you sitting downstairs staring?”
I smiled.
“I can stare discreetly.”
“Dad.”
“Fine.”
Recovery demanded risk.

Safety is not eliminating doors.
It is choosing who enters.
