Chapter 12 - Mason’s Sentence
Sentencing happened eleven months after attack.
Violet was seventeen.
Mason forty four.
Gavin already pleaded and awaited sentence.
Aaron had served local jail and begun probation.
The courtroom was crowded because Mason was locally known.
Veterans sat.
Sentinel employees.
Some supported him.
Some did not.
I hated uniforms of memory being dragged into it.
Mason’s defense presented:
Twenty years military/community service.

Employment of veterans.
Acceptance of responsibility through plea.
Psychological evaluation described resentment, entitlement, financial pressure, fear of federal prosecution.
No insanity.
Then prosecution:

Misuse of trust relationship.
Disabling security system.
Physical assault causing concussion/fracture.
Attempted evidence theft.
Flight.
Attempt to manipulate police response through brother.
Separate corporate data conspiracy harming burglary victims.
Then Violet spoke herself.
She wore navy dress.
No dramatic bandages now.
Her wrist healed.
A faint scar near hairline.
“Mason, I called you Uncle.”
He looked down.
“You came to my mother’s funeral.”
His shoulders tightened.
“You brought soup when Dad forgot food.”
Then:
“That did not make me your property.”
Silence.
“You used the fact that I trusted you to get through my front door.”
Then:
“When I told you no, you hit me.”
No descriptions.
Then:
“I don’t want you dead.”
Mason looked up.
“I don’t want you punished because my dad is angry.”
She glanced at judge.
“I want the court to punish what you actually did.”
Then:
“And I want everyone to stop calling this a Ranger story.”
My throat tightened.
“This happened because an adult wanted information and decided a kid was easier to control.”
There.
No war.
No elite myth.
Then she sat.
I did not speak.
My daughter had.
Judge imposed state sentence:
Eleven years, with two suspended after incarceration? Let's calculate effective 9 state.
Federal later imposed six years, with two consecutive to state and remainder concurrent, resulting effective roughly eleven years total? User likes strong consequences. Let's make effective 13 years:

Judge explained exact release depends credits and law.
No promise.
Mason also ordered restitution for Violet’s uninsured medical/therapy costs, Sentinel-related victims under federal case, and prohibited from security industry during supervised release.
He surrendered professional licenses.
Sentinel board negotiated purchase of Mason’s ownership stake at independently appraised fair value minus lawful offsets/claims? Need avoid confiscation. Under shareholder agreement, felony affecting company triggered mandatory buyback. Price independently appraised. Proceeds subject to federal restitution and tax liens, remainder his.
Employees kept company.
Then Mason spoke.
“Violet, I am sorry.”
She did not respond.
Then:
“Ethan.”
I looked.
“I blamed you for Kestrel for years because admitting Lucas was right meant admitting I had become the kind of man I used to despise.”
He swallowed.
Then:
“I knew Violet trusted me.”
Yes.
“I used that.”
Then:
“I hit her.”
No passive.
Then:
“I called Aaron because I knew he loved me enough to make a bad choice.”
Aaron, seated elsewhere? Could be not necessary.
Then:
“I destroyed my brother’s career too.”
Aaron made his own choice.
Mason corrected?
No.
Judge later noted.
Then Mason:
“I’m sorry.”
Sentence.
No reconciliation.
Outside, cameras.
Violet refused statement.
We got food.
She wanted tacos.
At restaurant:
“Do you feel better?”
She shrugged.
“A little.”
“Enough?”
“Maybe tomorrow.”
No cinematic closure.
Then Gavin sentenced.
Six years federal/state coordinated, restitution, security industry ban during supervision.
He had not struck Violet, cooperation reduced.
Peter Shaw received probation and license revocation for false statements/participation? Fine.
Aaron completed sentence, lost badge permanently.

No family dynasty.
Then Kestrel case closed after convictions.
