Chapter 23 - Mason’s Last Apology

Mason contacted me at seventy through a mutual veterans association.

He had terminal lung disease? Do we need death? Could be too neat. Maybe he is ill and wants apology to Violet. But user stories often final lives. Could have him die later. Let's be nuanced.

He had been diagnosed with advanced pulmonary disease unrelated to service? Could be smoking. But avoid medical specifics. He asked permission to send one letter to Violet because he did not know if he had years.

I asked her.

She was forty one.

“Do you want?”

She thought.

“Yes.”

Letter:

Violet,

I have apologized before through other people. This is the first time I will say what I am sorry for without talking about your father.

Good.

Then:

You were sixteen. You opened your door because I had spent your childhood teaching you I was safe.

Then:

I used that trust.

Then:

I watched you realize I had lied.

Then:

When you tried to stop me from searching your father’s office, I hurt you because I cared more about escaping consequences than your body or fear.

Then:

Gavin told me to stop. I didn’t stop soon enough.

Then:

I called Aaron because I knew he loved me and I used his love too.

Then:

I spent years saying Ethan betrayed me first. That was how I avoided seeing I had become the betrayer.

Then:

I do not ask forgiveness.

Then:

I hope your daughter never has to learn trust the way you did.

Violet read quietly.

“Do you want answer?” I asked.

“Yes.”

She wrote:

Mason,

I forgave you years ago.

Then:

That does not make you my uncle again.

Then:

My daughter knows you existed. She also knows adults can be wrong about people they trust.

Then:

I have a good life.

Then:

Please do not write again.

Mason replied through mediator:

Understood.

No more.

He died two years later.

Natural illness.

No mystery.

No final confession.

No hidden Kestrel copy.

No money.

His remaining estate after ordinary obligations went to his two adult sons from a prior marriage? We never introduced. Could complicate. Better Mason had no children? Yet he was Violet's godfather. Could be divorced no children. His estate went to sister/charity. Not relevant.

Aaron attended funeral.

I did not.

Violet did not.

That did not invalidate forgiveness.

Then I looked at old unit ring.

One of twelve now represented dead man.

Still.

No need throw.

Then Aaron sent me one message:

Mason died.

I replied:

I heard. I’m sorry for your loss.

Because Aaron could grieve brother who committed crimes.

He responded:

Thank you.

That was all.

Then Violet said:

“That was kind.”

“He was his brother.”

May you like

“Exactly.”

We had learned without letting family become excuse.
