Chapter 16 - Gavin Rhodes Comes Home

Gavin served just over five years after credits and coordinated sentences.
Victim notification came.
Violet was twenty two.
She barely remembered his face.
“Do I care?”
“Your choice.”
She read summary.
Gavin had been released to supervised reentry.
Restrictions on security work.
Restitution ongoing.
No contact order.
He had cooperated early.
He had not physically assaulted Violet.
But he disabled alarm, helped Mason enter under false pretenses, remained while attack happened, and fled without calling help.
She said:
“I don’t want contact.”
Done.
Then Gavin requested nothing.
Good.
He found work in warehouse scheduling.
No redemption tour.
No interview.
Then Peter Shaw’s PI license never restored? Maybe after suspension he changed career. Not relevant.
Then Aaron.
News surfaced he applied for private security job.
State regulator denied due decertification/conviction.
He appealed.
Eventually allowed non-security administrative work elsewhere.
No need permanent unemployment.
Consequences proportion.
Then Mason still had years.
He appealed sentence? Plea waived most. One challenge to federal consecutive portion failed.
No retrial.
Then Sentinel Ridge rebranded Sentinel Community Security under new ownership after Mason stake buyback.
Would rebrand to escape name.
Employees purchased minority.
No Mason control.
Then Violet graduated college.
Human factors engineer.
She accepted job with aviation safety company in Charlotte.
Farther away.
I wanted complain.
Did not.
“Good job.”
“You hate Charlotte.”
“I do not.”
“You called it airport with city attached.”
“Accurate.”
She moved.
I helped carry boxes.
At front door of apartment, she gave me spare key.
Then took back.
“No.”
“What?”
“We aren't doing hidden emergency key.”
I laughed.
She stored with building management/friend per safe system.
Good.
Then:
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“You can visit. Call first.”
I clutched chest.
“Cruel.”
She smiled.
No ownership.
Then after move I sat in empty house.
Hallway.
No Violet.
Not crime.
Growing up.
I moved couch back? After years, still opposite wall.
I left.
Memory had become design choice.
Then I found Mason's old gift bag from evidence? It had been returned. The compass.
Violet had refused.
I had kept in closet.
Why?
No reason.
I asked.
She said:
“Throw it.”
I donated? Could feel odd. Silver compass maybe not. I discarded.
No relic.
Then black Ranger ring mine stayed safe.
Sometimes wore at veterans events.
I would not surrender service identity because Mason failed.
Then I met Laura Ames through neighbor barbecue.
She was fifty? Ethan mid-40s now, 5+ years later 46? Actually start 41, Violet 22 means six years later, Ethan 47. Laura 45.
We dated slowly.
I told Violet.
She said:
“Finally.”
“What means?”
“You've been emotionally married to spreadsheets.”
I laughed.
Rachel memory remained.
Laura did not compete.
No rushed marriage.
Then one evening Laura asked why alarm had so many independent controls.
I told story.
She said:
“Reasonable.”
No savior.
Then she asked:
“Do you still check doors three times?”
“Yes.”
“We can work on two.”
May you like
Good.
Life expands.
